The default Google account is the primary Google account associated with your devices and services, including contacts, calendars, and apps. Further, Google also personalizes experiences based on the information contained in the default Google account.
But before moving on to the steps, let’s look into why to change your default Google account.
Why Would You Want to Change Your Default Gmail Account
Well, changing your default Gmail account can be motivated by various reasons, often tied to personal preferences, organization, or convenience. Here are a few common scenarios:
- If you use your Gmail account for personal and work-related purposes, set the one you use most frequently or professionally as the default.
- If one account has security concerns, changing the default can be a proactive measure to safeguard sensitive information.
- Setting an account with a less critical role as default helps prevent sending accidental emails from a more critical account.
- If you have multiple accounts and frequently switch between them, having the most-used or critical account set as default can prevent errors like sending an email from the wrong account.

How to Change the Default Google Account on Mobile
The steps to change the default Google account on mobile differ based on whether it runs on Android or iPhone. Let’s begin.
On Android
Setting another Google account as the default only means that all Google services, such as Calendar, Contact, Docs, Drive, Gmail, and so on, are synced appropriately without any issues. With this understanding, let’s begin with the steps.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Android device. Then, scroll down and tap on Google.
Step 2: Tap on your account name. From the pop-up, choose the account you want to make default.
You will see a distinct separator (line) between the default account and other connected accounts.
If you have only one account, add another by choosing the ‘Add another account’ option. However, if you have multiple accounts and want to remove some, continue with the below steps.
Step 3: Select ‘Manage accounts on this device.’ On the next screen, choose Google.
You will see a list of email addresses connected to your mobile device.
Step 4: Tap on the one you want to remove. From the top-right corner of the screen, tap on the three-dot icon.
Step 5: From the menu, choose Remove account. In the Remove account pop-up, choose Remove account.
That’s it. The email account you chose will be removed from your device. It is important to note that no one-click remove all account option exists. So, you must repeat the above steps until the unwanted email accounts are cleared from your mobile device.
Once you have removed the account that you no longer wish to have, add a new account to your Android device. To do so, continue with the steps below.
Step 6: Go back and tap on your account name. From the pop-up, choose ‘Add another account.’
You will be directed to the Google sign-in screen once you verify your identity with your fingerprint or password. Follow the on-screen instructions and add your preferred account by typing the credentials.
On iOS
Unlike Android, the core of your account on an iPhone is tied to your Apple ID, so changing the default Google account can be tricky. However, if you use Google products such as Gmail, Calendar, Keep, and so on, switching between Google accounts is simple.
For demonstration, we will show you how to remove a default Google account on an iPhone and then how to change the default Google account. Follow the below instructions.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Mail.
Step 2: Now, choose Accounts. On the next screen, select the Gmail account to remove.
Note: By default, the first Gmail account (the default account) you add will be listed simply as Gmail. Any additional Gmail accounts will be listed using the full email address.
Step 3: Tap on Delete Account.
With this, you have successfully removed the connected Google account. If you want to connect a new Google account without signing out of the existing ones, skip past the above steps and follow the below steps.
Step 4: Under Accounts, tap Add Account. Then, select your preferred service; in our case, it will be Google. Once you select, enter your account credentials and add the account to your iPhone.
There you go. You have successfully changed your default account on your iPhone for the Mail app. If you want to change the default Google account for other apps, such as Google Voice, you may need to adjust the settings within those apps.
