How to Block Someone on WeChat on Android and iOS

People can annoy, obstinate and even follow you on mobile messaging apps. I bet you have such a person in your WeChat contacts and you want to do something for sanity. Been there done that. See how you can unfriend, hide face, hide moments, mute or simply block someone on WeChat.

Their respective methods and settings for both Android and iOS smartphones remain the same. So you can follow the same steps for both.

Let’s get started.

1. Mute someone on WeChat

Blocking someone is not subtle. It’s one of the unwritten and unwritten rules of the Internet — you don’t block someone unless they cross a certain limit. So let’s start with the Mute feature. Meet Mr. He’s someone no one wants to talk to. Tap the name to open the chat window, then tap the ellipsis to open the menu.

Tap Mute Notifications to activate it. Now you won’t get a notification when someone pings you for no reason at all. Subtle, no?

If you’re muting a group, only notifications from that group will be muted, but you’ll continue to hear notifications from individuals in that group if they choose to message you directly.

2. Hide moments in WeChat

WeChat handles Moments differently. The policy is your friend I am not my friend. That means even though your friend can watch Moments, their friends can’t unless they’re your friends too. Now if you don’t want someone to see your Moment, tap the Me tab at the bottom of the screen and select Settings. Then select Privacy.

Under Moments and Time Capsules, tap Hide My Posts. Now just tap the ‘+’ icon and search for the name where you want to hide your posts and moments.

If you want to remove this name in the future, tap the ‘-‘ icon which will show up now. Select the name you want to delete and tap OK again.

3. Unfriend someone on WeChat

Unfriending someone is a drastic step, and often people have good enough reasons to do so on WeChat. Launch the WeChat app and tap Contacts and select the name of the person you want to unfriend. Now tap the three-dot menu to reveal more options.

Tap Remove at the bottom of the menu to remove the person from your friends list. This will unfriend the person and you will no longer receive messages from them.

As you can see, you can also manage Moments and Timeboxes from each contact’s menu here.

4. Block someone on WeChat

This is the last resort. It’s what we do when things get unbearable and get out of control. Blocking is the only option for people who don’t have a filter and who think they can text and share anything.

Open WeChat and tap on the Contacts tab. Select the name of the person you want to block permanently. Tap the menu icon in the upper right as you did in the previous section.

A new menu will show up from the bottom. Tap Block and then OK to confirm the same.

5. How to Find Me

If an unknown person is sending you a friend request on WeChat, the first question that might pop into your mind is how did he/she find you? Anyone can search your name and email to make a simple guess. Then connecting the dots is not very difficult.

Tap the Me tab on the home screen and then select Settings. Now tap on Privacy.

Tap Find me here and you’ll be amazed at how many ways people can search for you on WeChat.

If you share QR code images via email or on the web, then you are doomed. Joining public group chats can lead to unwanted friend requests. A mutual friend/enemy can share your contact card. Getting hold of someone’s phone number is not that difficult today.

Turn off the options you don’t want others to exploit here.

We don’t talk!

WeChat, like any other messaging app, was created to bring people together and make it easy for you to make new friends or keep in touch with old ones. Unfortunately, some people just can’t stop abusing the very system built to help them. Luckily, there are ways to protect yourself by using blocking, muting, unfriending, and even reporting features. Use them wisely.
