How to Backup and Read iPhone Messages on Windows and Mac

Backup message

Since the launch of iOS 5, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad owners have been able to enjoy free, encrypted messages between them thanks to

iMessage

. However, as an essential aspect of people’s lives (

as much as email

in some cases), it’s important to know how to keep your messages safe and protected in case something happens to your iPhone or other iOS device.

Here’s how you can do it and also how you can read backups of your messages on your computer without an iPhone.

Backup your messages

Step 1: To get started, you need to perform a local backup of your iOS device via itunes to have all its information on your Mac or PC. To do so, simply open itunes on your computer and plug in your iPhone (or wait for it to show up if you have wireless sync enabled). Once that’s done, click on its main info window and click Back up now below Manual backup and restore.

The backup process can take a while, so be patient.

Step 2: Go to where your iPhone backup data is stored. On Windows: Users > [username] > App Data. On a Mac, go to finder and click Go on the menu bar while holding Select key to reveal Library folder. Open it up.

Once inside, look for the folder named Application Support and open it.

Note: From here on, the same instructions apply whether you’re using a PC or a Mac.

Step 3: In this folder, go to MobileSync > Backup. You will find one or more folders named with a sequence of numbers. Open the most recent one located there.

Once inside, look for a file named 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28 (sort them by name to make it easier) and copy it to your desktop.

Note: You can open this file with an app like Edit text. It will all look messy, but if you read carefully, you’ll notice all your messages are there.

Now, let’s see how to understand all this and read your message.

Read your message backup files

There are a few online tools that serve this purpose, but for security reasons we will be using the native Mac app to read our messages.

Go to this website and download MesaSQLite for Mac OS X, similar programs for Windows are also available.

Step 1: Extract the application and open it up. When you do that will immediately prompt you to choose your message backup file. Do like that.

Open backup

Step 2: Take a look at the image below and make sure to select the same option in the application fields. (message, text, contains). This will allow you to use the search field to search for your messages, which you can preview right in the app.

Your go. Now not only can you store local backups of your messages, but you can also read and search them without worrying about what will happen to your iOS device.
