WhatsApp is now rolling out the backup to Google Drive functionality where you can upload your WhatsApp media and messages database to Google Drive. While the addition of this feature is nice, you still have a hard time with Google Drive as a cloud service. Today we will see how you can use almost any cloud service to store backups.
We’ll be using Bittorrent’s awesome Sync app to do this. Let’s see how.
Install Sync on your Phone and PC
Download and install the Sync app for your PC from here. Similarly install the app on your phone from the Play store. We’ve already shown you how to set up Sync on your PC, so I won’t go through that part again.
On your phone, after installing the application, touch the plus icon in the lower right corner of the screen and then select New backup. Choose the location of your WhatsApp folder, which is usually located in the root of the internal storage.
Next touch WhatsApp folder and then on device will open a pop-up window asking you to email or copy the link. You can email the link to yourself or copy it to your clipboard and then sync it to your PC.
Hot Tip: Want to easily share text-based content like links, names, phone numbers, etc. between your phone and PC? Just copy the content, select send to email and save it as a draft in Gmail and it will instantly sync with the web app on your PC.
Backup to the cloud
Step 1: Install the app of your favorite cloud service. If your cloud service doesn’t have an app, you’re out of luck. Go through the usual setup process and move on to the next step.
Step 2: Open the Sync app and click on the settings icon in the top right corner then enable Manual connection.
Paste the link of the WhatsApp folder from the previous step.
The trick here is to use Bittorrent Sync to locally sync a WhatsApp folder to your PC and save it to your preferred cloud service’s folder. I will be using OneDrive for this article, so I will save the WhatsApp folder in the folder of OneDrive on my PC. Similarly, you must save this folder to your preferred cloud service’s folder.
After you add the folder, it will ask for approval. To approve, open the Sync app on your phone and click the notification icon in the upper right corner and tap the check mark.
Restore your messages
While recovering messages from Google Drive is seamless, our method requires the following steps.
Step 1: Install and set up WhatsApp on your phone. When everything is up and running, visit Settings > Apps and stop WhatsApp application. Also turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data.
Step 2: Once you’ve stopped the app, copy the WhatsApp folder, the folder on your PC, to your phone’s internal storage. Don’t copy folder to SD card, WhatsApp only detect folder stored in internal storage.
Step 3: Restart WhatsApp and you should have all your messages. If they don’t load, restart your phone.
Stop thinking
This method is not limited to WhatsApp only, you can backup any folder on your phone. Use IFTTT and you have many different options. If you have any doubts or thoughts, we are always available in the discussion forums.
