Slides and presentations can be a bit boring at times. If you’re looking to add a personal touch, adding a voice behind those creations can help add a bit of power to a presentation. Besides adding visual cues, voiceovers add a unique dimension to simple slides. And graphic design tools like Canva let you add captions pretty easily.
There are two ways to do so in Canva for the web — you can record audio first. Or, you use Canva’s (experimental) recording studio feature.
You’ll need to use a noise- and distraction-free room in either case for clear and crisp audio. Once the slides are ready, the tool takes care of the rest.
So, if you’re interested in exploring Canva, here’s how to add voiceovers to a Canva presentation.
How to add voiceovers to Canva presentations via audio files
Here, we assume that you will add individual voiceovers to different slides. While the web version of Canva accepts audio and video files, slides and presentations work best with MP4 files. Another limitation of adding an audio file to a slide is that you can only add one sound per presentation.
So, in case you don’t have access to an MP4 video, you can easily convert it using one of the many tools like VLC Player.
Since Canva has fairly limited customization options, you’ll have to make sure the files are trimmed before uploading.
Step 1: Once all your slides are complete and ready, upload the files to Canva.
Here, make sure that all your files are named appropriately so that it doesn’t confuse you later. The idea is to name the files according to the number of slides.
Step 2: On the first slide (must add voiceover), drag that file onto the slide.
Since it’s an MP4 file, you’ll see a black block at the top of the slide.
Step 3: Click the Play icon at the top to see if the audio file plays well. Once done, select the audio file block and click the Transparency icon at the top.
Drag the transparency slider to the right so the audio block is almost invisible. Similarly, you can also adjust the volume of an audio file by clicking the Volume button in the top ribbon.
Alternatively, you can also push the audio block backwards if you have a lot of elements on your slide. This way the audio block won’t show up.
Repeat the above steps for all slides. When everything is ready, hit the Play button to see your dub in action
There is also a ‘Record Yourself’ button in Canva’s Uploads panel. However, during testing, we couldn’t get it to work.
How to add a voiceover presentation via Canva
Canva has a built-in method by which you can add voiceovers to pre-made presentations. Among the many things you need to consider, you will need a distraction-free room for voice recording. This is especially true if you don’t have a dedicated mic and are relying on your PC’s mic.
Also, since this is not a direct implementation but rather an alternative, you will see fewer customization options. Unfortunately, this means you won’t be able to cut and modify records on Canva for the web.
Now that everything is in place, let’s see how to add voiceovers to a Canva presentation.
Step 1: Once you’ve added all the final details to the presentation, tap the three-dot menu in the far-right corner.
Select ‘Present and Record’ from the list of options, then select Start Recording.
Step 2: Naturally, you will have to allow audio. For now, you can omit camera permissions because we want audio, not video, in this Canva presentation. Once done, press the Start Recording button.
Now, all you need to do is record your voice for all the slides. Slides with recordings are highlighted in red. So remember to move along the slides as required by the presentation.
When you need to pause, click the Pause button above. This way, you can also skip some slides where you don’t want any captions.
Step 3: Once the recording is complete, click the Done button in the upper right corner.
Depending on the length of the audio and the content of the presentation, the download may take time.
In addition to direct download, Canva also gives you the option to directly copy and share the link to the presentation.
