Most PDFs have a white background, to ensure the black font is clearly legible. Interestingly, PDFs are usually created by converting another file type, e.g., Word’s .docx file. As such, the PDF will assume the background image or color of the original file. Thankfully, you don’t have to make changes to the original file format to edit the background image or color of your PDF.
Using a PDF editor such as Adobe Acrobat, you can directly edit any PDF’s background color or image. Here’s how to do so:
How to Change the Background Color of a PDF Using Adobe Acrobat
If you have an Adobe Acrobat Pro subscription, you can change the background color of your PDF using the Edit PDF tool. Here’s how to do so:
Step 1: Launch the Adobe Acrobat app from your PC’s Start menu or Taskbar.
Step 2: Click the Tools option from the toolbar.
Step 3: Click the Edit PDF button in the Create & Edit group.
Step 4: Click the Select a File button and select the PDF you want to edit from your library.
Step 5: On the Adobe Acrobat toolbar, click on the More option.
Step 6: Select Background from the dropdown.
Step 7: Click Add. This will launch the Add Background dialog box.
Step 8: On the Add Background dialog box, tick the circle beside From color.
Step 9: Click the color tile beside From color to view the color palette and select your preferred background color.
Step 10: Click OK to save your new background color.
How to Insert a Background Image Into a PDF Using Adobe Acrobat
You can also insert, add, and edit an image in your PDF as a background instead of using solid color. Here’s how to do so:
Step 1: Launch the Adobe Acrobat app from your PC’s Start menu or Taskbar.
Step 2: Click the Tools option from the toolbar.
Step 3: Click the Edit PDF button in the Create & Edit group.
Step 4: Click the Select a File button and select the PDF you want to edit from your library.
Step 5: On the Adobe Acrobat toolbar, click on the More option.
Step 6: Select Background from the dropdown.
Step 7: Click Add. This will launch the Add Background dialog box.
Step 8: On the Add Background dialog box, tick the circle beside File.
Step 9: Click the Browse button beside File to select the image you want as your background.
How to Customize the Background Image in a PDF Using Adobe Acrobat
After inserting an image as your PDF background, the appearance or position of the image may be different from what you want. Here’s how you can customize the background image.
Step 1: On the Adobe Acrobat toolbar, click on the More option.
Step 2: Select Background from the dropdown.
Step 3: Click Update. This will launch the Update Background dialog box.
Step 4: In the Absolute Scale box, enter or adjust the percentage scale for your picture.
Step 5: To rotate the image, click the buttons beside the Rotation box.
Step 6: To reduce or increase the Opacity of your background image, drag the slider beside Opacity. The opacity determines the vividness of the image.
Step 7: To adjust the position of the image, click the controls beside Vertical Distance and Horizontal Distance.
Step 8: Click OK to save your changes.
How to Remove the Background Image in a PDF Using Adobe Acrobat.
If you would like to revert to the default background of your PDF, here’s how you can do so:
Step 1: On the Adobe Acrobat toolbar, click on the More option.
Step 2: Select Background from the dropdown.
Step 3: Click Remove. This will remove the background image.
Changing the Author Name of a PDF
Using Adobe Acrobat Pro, you can make other changes to a PDF, including but not limited to the author’s name. Being able to change the author name on a PDF ensures that if you are working from someone else’s PC, their name isn’t what is saved as the author’s name.
