How to Backup Gmail Using Another Gmail Account

There are different ways to backup your Gmail account. You can download emails via POP or have them automatically forwarded to another account. In this article, we will discuss how to use another Gmail account to backup your main Gmail account. It’s only a one time setting it up and forgetting method so you should definitely do this if you use Gmail.

To get started, you’ll obviously need to create another Gmail account, preferably with a different password (common sense, I know).

We will be using Gmail Mail Loader to backup emails from the main Gmail account. This method can also be used to backup emails from other accounts like Hotmail and Yahoo, but you need to make sure they support POP access.

Here are the steps.

First, go to Settings (at the top right) in your main Gmail account and click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

Backup gmail1

There, under POP Downloads, click “Enable POP for all mail.” Also, make sure that you select “keep a copy of Gmail in your Inbox” in the 2nd point where it says “When messages are accessed using POP”.

When you’re done, click Save Changes at the bottom.

Now, sign in to the Gmail account we created to back up the main email account. There, again, you need to go to Settings and click on Accounts and Import.

backup gmail3

Here we need to go to “Check mail with POP3” and click on the Add POP3 email account button.

backup gmail4

You will get a box asking you to enter your email address. Add your primary Gmail address here.

Click next and you will now need to enter your primary Gmail username and password. Gmail automatically detects the other settings so you can keep them as is. Yes, you may want to set up labels for incoming messages or archive them, but since this account will only be used for backups, I don’t see any use in these options.

backup gmail6

Click Add Account and then Finish. Note that I have not selected the option that says “Yes, I want to be able to send mail as…”. Again, that’s because I’ll only use this to back up my main Gmail account, nothing else.

backup gmail7

Now we’re done. This account will automatically start fetching emails from your primary Gmail account. However, it will take some time so don’t expect to see it happen immediately.

backup gmail8

We recommend that you check this email account periodically to see if emails from the primary account are showing up there and that everything is being backed up.

So that’s how we can backup Gmail with another Gmail account. Do you use any other method to back up emails? Let us know in the comments section.
