Who is Keith Gretzky?
Keith Gretzky was born on February 16, 1967 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada to Walter Gretzky and Phyllis Hockin.
He has four siblings; a sister Kim and brothers Wayne, Brent, and Glen Gretzky. His brothers Wayne and Brent also played ice hockey and had careers in the National Hockey League (NHL), with Wayne going on to be a legend of the game.
Keith played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Brantford Alexanders, Windsor Spitfires, Belleville Bulls, and Hamilton Steelhawks. His career was somewhat good, as his best season came in 1986–87 when he recorded 35 goals, 66 assists for 101 points in 64 games with Belleville and Hamilton.
He also played in the International Hockey League with the Flint Spirits, San Diego Gulls and the Phoenix Roadrunners. During his 5 season career in the IHL, he managed 28 goals, 51 assists, and 79 points in 132 games.
Gretzky tested the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Rochester Americans, East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with Winston-Salem Thunderbirds and far away Europe to play with Ketterä in Finland’s I-Divisioona, and the Ayr Raiders in the British Hockey League before retiring.
After he announced his retirement, Gretzky decided to go into coaching. He took over the role of assistant coach with with the Tri-City Americans (WHL). In 1994, he joined Bakersfield as the head coach of the WCHL’s Fog.
As a manager, Keith coached his brother Brent when he was manager of the the Asheville Smoke of the UHL for two seasons from 1998 to 2000.
Gretzky was hired by the Edmonton Oilers as assistant general manager on August 2, 2016. He served as interim General Manager (GM) of the Edmonton Oilers January 23 to May 7, 2019, after former general manager Peter Chiarelli was sacked from that position.
