Change 16 bit to 32 bit Color (or 32 bit to 16 bit Color) in Windows 7

I can’t pinpoint an app, but I’m sure there are a few (ok.. RoadRash is one of those games I still play once during the blue moon) that change the default Windows color depth from 32-bit (True Type) to display 16-bit color on the fly. These apps run in a specific mode as long as the user is working on it, and when the app is closed it (usually) reverts the Windows color settings to the default 32-bit colors.

Now the problem is, these applications can crash (this happened to me a lot) causing Windows to get stuck with 16 bit color settings (sometimes the resolution is messed up too). So, if you ever find yourself in such a situation and wonder why the colors don’t seem right, the following steps will help you get back to your default display settings.

Change Windows color depth from 16 to 32 bit or vice versa

Step 1: Right click on an empty space on your desktop and select Screen resolution option to open screen resolution settings for Windows.

Step 2: If you have multiple displays connected (like a projector or HD TV), select it from the drop-down list and click the button Advanced settings link.

Step 3: When you click the Advanced Settings link, Windows will open the properties window of your default Graphics Card. Navigate to the Adapters tab in the window and click the . button List all modes.

Step 4: In the pop-up window, select the visibility you want to apply and click the OK button. The screen may turn off for a few seconds before your settings are applied. Confirm your action to make the changes permanent.

Note: If you don’t want to change the resolution but just want to convert 16- and 32-bit colors, click the Monitor tab in the Driver Properties window and select a specific color depth from the drop-down control and then click OK.

Conclusion

So if you find your monitor stuck in some weird resolutions with distorted colors, you now know how to go back to the default settings. Furthermore, if you ever do color sensitive work like Photoshop or 3D Max, you can manually change the color depth using the steps mentioned above.
