Burns attended the Americ an Heritage School and participated in the school’s football. He totaled 135 tackles and 28 sacks between his junior and senior years, helping his team win state championships. He participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in 2016. He pledged to play collegiate football at Florida State University.

Burns participated in all 13 games while a freshman at Florida State in 2016 and led the nation in sacks (8.5) among all freshmen. He started all 13 games as a sophomore in 2017 and finished with 48 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

In 2018, Burns played in all 12 games as a junior and finished with 52 tackles and 10 sacks. Burns made the decision to bypass his senior year and join the 2019 NFL Draft following the season.

In the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Burns was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the 16th overall selection. He had a sack on Gardner Minshew and recovered a forced fumble for a touchdown in the 34–27 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5.

He made 16 appear ances in his debut season, starting five of them. In all, he recorded 25 tackles, one forced fumble, and 7.5 sacks. Burns recorded his first sack of the season against Justin Herbert in Week 3 of the 2020 season, a strip sack that was recovered by the Panthers in a 21–16 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Burns recorded a strip sack on Drew Brees in Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints; however, the Panthers recovered the ball during the 27–24 loss.

Burns was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after recording two sacks on Matthew Stafford in a shutout victory against the Detroit Lions in Week 11.

In the 2020 campaign, he made 15 appearances and made 14 starts. In all, he recorded 58 tackles, four passes defended, three forced fumbles, and nine sacks.

Burns was added to the Panthers COVID-19 reserve roster on December 27, 2021. He started 16 of the 17 games he played in during the 2021 season. In all, he finished with 50 tackles, four passes defended, two forced fumbles, and nine sacks.

He was named to the Pro Bowl for the 2021 campaign. According to his teammates, he was ranked 76th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022.

On April 26, 2022, the Panthers selected Burns’s contract’s fifth-year option. NFC Defensive Player of the Week was awarded to Burns for his two sacks on Russell Wilson, forced fumble, and one pass deflection in Week 12’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Throughout 16 games and 16 starts, he finished the 2022 season with 12.5 sacks, 63 total tackles, three passes defended, and one forced fumble. He was named to the Pro Bowl for the 2022 campaign. He was placed 54th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2023 list by his fellow players.

Burns recorded seven tackles and two sacks in Atlanta’s opening game of the 2023 season. It was his third multi-sack game of the season.

In Week 5 against Detroit, he passed Kevin Greene to move up to fifth place all-time in Panthers history with his 42nd career sack. Burns was given the franchise tag by the Panthers on March 5, 2024.
