Book Review: Network Your Computers & Devices Step By Step

Most modern households today have more than one computer. Thus, the basic home network becomes an essential part of the learning process that an average computer user has to go through, because it is easier if the different computers in the home are connected through a Local Area Network (LAN).

Network Your Computers & Devices Step By Step is a book that explains various aspects of home networking in Windows 7 in a step-by-step format, with appropriate screenshots. It also involves sharing between Windows 7 and other operating systems such as Mac OS X, Ubuntu and other versions of Windows.

Your Computer Network Step by Step Device

The book is written by my good friend Ciprian Rusen, who runs the blog 7Tutorials. When he informed me that O’Reilly had decided to publish his book, I was surprised. O’Reilly is the leading publisher of computer books, not only in the US but around the world. Therefore, publishing a book with them is certainly a great achievement.

Note: This is an unbiased review and I have not been paid for it (I did receive a copy of the review, though.) The links in the post are also not affiliate links.

The book starts with the basics of home networking and how you can set up routers and devices. It also dives into the specifics of configuring the Belkin N+ wireless router and the D-Link DIR-615 router. It then goes into user account setup and as well as library setup for Windows 7, a topic many users will find useful.

The book then goes through the process of creating a network, setting up the sharing settings correctly, creating a homegroup (we talked about setting up a homegroup in Windows 7 before), sharing libraries, folders, devices, and working with them in a network.

In the previous few chapters, it explored interoperability and talked about network sharing between different operating systems. It also talks about securing your network and setting up parental controls to monitor kids.

What differentiates this book from most other similar books I’ve read is the explanatory language and the accompanying screenshots. Ciprian wrote everything in very understandable language, free of tech jargon. Even those who don’t consider themselves tech-savvy and even find it difficult to even think about setting up a home network on their own, can go through the instructions in this book and get started.

If you enjoy reading tech blogs (such as our blog ????), and love this presentation format, where everything is explained step-by-step with pictures showing what each step is about, then you’ll want to check out this book. It is very detailed (nearly 500 pages!) and can be purchased from O’Reilly’s online catalog.

If you are a Windows 7 user learning about home networking, how to do it effectively, and many other aspects of it, I highly recommend you get this book.
