If you have a PlayStation system,
maybe PS3
PSP or one
PSVita
and you live outside the US, you can save significantly by purchasing your digital games from the US PlayStation store, as their physical copies tend to be much more expensive outside. outside the US
Many gamers know this and choose to buy their games digitally, but the problem is that to add money to your PlayStation store wallet, you have to buy a prepaid card from a third party, which tends to add up from 10 to 20 percent of the original cost.
Thankfully, Sony implemented a way to top up your PlayStation store wallet via Paypal not too long ago, although this method is limited to US gamers only. Or is it?
Read along to learn how to create a US PlayStation Network account and how you can also use your Paypal account to add money to it and save some money in the process.
Ready? Start.
Prepare your account
First, go to the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) website and create a US PlayStation Network (PSN) account by clicking Create Account link at the top right of the window. Make sure to choose USA is your ‘Country/Region’. Then check the confirmation email and you should be set.
We assume that you already have a Paypal account from another country or you don’t have one at all. In any case, the next step is to create a Paypal account for the US, which is a bit more complicated.
Get started by going to Paypal’s website and clicking Register button. You will then be asked to fill in your name, email address and other personal data. The important thing here is to use a Consistency Address and phone number in the US. This means that the address you choose must be a physical address and the phone number must match the State you listed when you addressed it. There are plenty of sources on the web where you can get this information, just Google around.
This is very important, as the US SEN website will Are not accepts funding from Paypal accounts that do not have a US address.
Normally, after you submit this information, Paypal will ask you to link your bank account, credit or debit card to your Paypal account. This is not mandatory (in fact, whether you link cards or accounts, they also need to be from the US, which will make things harder for you). But as you can see from the screenshot below, this is completely unnecessary.
Add credits from your Paypal account to your PlayStation Network US account
Once your account is ready, it’s time to top up your PSN account. To do that, first transfer some money to your newly created Paypal US account. Then log in to your PSN account on the Sony Entertainment Network website. Once there, hover your cursor over your username and click Add money to wallet select.
You will be taken to another page in the SEN page. There, on Account tab, select Purse left option. Here you will see the option to add funds to your PSN wallet using Paypal. Click it.
On the next screen, you will be given the option to add money to a fixed amount ($5, $10, $25, $50, etc.). Choose one, click Continue and you will be taken to the Paypal authorization page.
Simply sign in with your credentials (from a US Paypal account where you have the funds), authorize the payment and you will be taken back to the SEN website where you will see a message stating your transaction. you succeeded.
Hot Tip: I personally find it quite helpful to have a dedicated Paypal account for PSN purchases. I just do occasional large transfers, and then I micromanage all my PSN related small transactions on it without having to mix information with my main Paypal account.
You are done! You now have money in your PSN wallet to buy games and other PlayStation media. All with a secure method and without paying any extra money to third parties. Enjoy!
