Math Input Panel is a new feature introduced in Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7. It can assist you when using input devices such as touch screen, digital pen or even a regular mouse to write math formulas and equations. Also works with tools like Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org, and math software products that support Math Markup Language (MathML).
This tool can recognize American high school and college math in your written text, including numbers and letters, arithmetic, calculus, functions, sets, algebra, etc. You can find the Math Input Panel shortcut by going to the “All Programs -> Accessories -> Math Input Panel” link in the start menu.
Click on it and the Math Input Panel appears with the prompt “Write math here”. Use it to write, in fact, draw mathematical formulas. Results can be previewed at the top left of the window. You can always use the Undo and Redo functions to redo your work just like you would in any other text editor.
If you misspelled the text, don’t hesitate to use the tools on the right side of the app. Click the “Erase” button and you can erase sketches caused by accidental strokes. When you are done, click “Write” to rewrite what you have to write.
Deleting unrecognized handwritten messages is not the only way to fix the problem. You can also use the “Select and Correct” button. Hold down the left mouse button, drag and drop the character you want to correct into the “Select and Correct” box on the right and a drop-down menu will appear. You can now choose the correct interpretation and continue with your article.
When done, simply click “Insert” at the bottom to paste the element into the desired document.
Note: By default, the Math Input Panel saves its work on the clipboard. Therefore, you can paste the element manually using “Paste” in the context menu or the keyboard shortcut CTRL + V if the formula is not automatically inserted.
Let’s focus on the top menu bar for a bit. Click the “History” tab and you can go back to any formula you’ve written in the current window.
In the “Options” menu, you can set options like “Clear writing area after inserting” and “Show on-screen keyboard buttons”, which may be useful to you.
So, if your work involves using math formulas and you don’t want to install additional software to create math equations, you can use the Windows 7 Math Input Panel to get the job done.
