A Detailed Guide to Fixing AirPods Not Charging Issues

Apple AirPods have led the way for a new generation of truly wireless stereo and wireless headphones. Despite being the best-selling brand in the wireless headphone market, Apple AirPods have their problems. In an old article, we outlined solutions to some common AirPods problems. Here, we will focus on troubleshooting AirPods charging problems.

Since this is a fairly new product category from Apple, potential problems may vary. However, we are confident that our solutions will help with the majority of charging related problems. Without further ado, let’s get right to the point.

Note: The suggested solutions below apply to all generations of Apple AirPods i.e. AirPods 1, AirPods 2, and AirPods Pro.

1. AirPods don’t charge in the box

Your AirPods won’t charge at all? You can do a few things to fix that.

Plug the charging case into the power

If AirPods do not charge when placed in the charging case, check that the charging case is charged enough to power the AirPods. Place the case (with AirPods inside) near your device and open the lid. That will bring up a panel showing the AirPods and the case’s battery level.

If the charging case is below 10 or 15%, plug the charging case into a power source or place it on the charging dock if your AirPods support wireless charging.

Clean charging case

Check that there isn’t any material covering the metal contacts in the charging case. If so, blowing dry air into the ports should be enough to remove dirt and debris. You can also use a dry cotton swab to clean the charging ports of the AirPods case.

Warning: Unplug the charging case from the power source before cleaning. You can damage the metal contacts if you use a hard or sharp object to clean the charging port of the AirPods case.

2. An AirPod that doesn’t charge

Another common charging problem is placing a charging AirPod in the box. Many users have reported this problem. For some, it’s the right AirPod that refuses to charge while others do the opposite. Whatever the case may be, refer to the solutions below.

Reinsert AirPods

Try removing the affected AirPod from the charging case first and re-inserting it. If it still won’t charge, try the other solutions below.

Cleaning the AirPods tail

Use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the tail of the AirPod that won’t charge when it’s in the box.

Clean the charging box compartment

This problem mainly occurs when your AirPods are not making contact with the metal pins in the charging case. In this case, you should also check that the affected AirPod compartment is free of any dirt or lint. These particles can interfere with the connection between the pin of the charging case and the metal contact on the rear of the AirPods. You can blow dry air into the charging compartment or use a dry cloth to remove any foreign particles that are preventing the AirPods from charging.

3. AirPods not fully charged

Another commonly reported problem with Apple’s wireless earbuds is that sometimes they don’t charge to 100%. Here are some possible solutions.

Reset AirPods

Doing this can help fix charging issues and other problems you may have with your AirPods. Follow the steps below to get it done. Before resetting your AirPods, Apple recommends disconnecting them from your device (see Step #1 – Step #3).

Step 1: Put the AirPods in the charging case and close the lid. Open the cover again after a few seconds.

Step 2: Remove the AirPods from your device. To do this, navigate to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the info icon next to your AirPods.

Step 4: To reset AirPods, touch and hold the bottom of the setup on the back of the charging case until the front status light flashes amber.

Proceed to the next step to reconnect your AirPods to your device.

Step 5: Place the charging case (with AirPods inside) near your device, lift the lid, and follow the onscreen prompts.

replace AirPods

Like other Apple products, the Lithium battery powers the AirPods. The battery is efficient, charges quickly and is relatively long-lasting. However, there is a problem: they (read: batteries) wear out and weaken over time.

Through our research, we found that this issue is common with older generations of AirPods manufactured in 2016 and 2017. Newer generations (AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro) have a 100% charge. And this may be because they’re still in the early stages of a surprisingly short and limited lifespan: AirPods’ batteries only last for about 2 years or 3 years, if you’re lucky. It all depends on the level of use.

If resetting your AirPods doesn’t fully charge, you should contact Apple Support for help.

4. AirPods No Wireless Charging

To wirelessly charge your AirPods, place the charging case with the status light facing up on the wireless charging mat/cushion. If AirPods won’t charge despite being properly placed on the charger, here are some things to do.

Check the standard of the charging base

There are two main wireless charging standards: Qi (pronounced ) chee) and Powermat. The AirPods wireless charging case only supports the old charging case. That means you can only charge your AirPods using a Qi-compatible or Qi-certified wireless charging dock. The Powermat charging mat will not wirelessly charge your AirPods.

If your charger doesn’t support the Qi standard, your AirPods won’t charge wirelessly.

Remove protective cover

While some protective covers allow wireless charging of AirPods, others (especially thick and bulky protective cases) can interfere with the transfer of power between the charging mat and the AirPods charging case. Remove the protective cover from your AirPods case and check if it is charging wirelessly.

Clean charging case

Dirt or moisture on the AirPods charging case can interfere with charging. Or worse: damage the AirPods. Wipe the charging case with a dry cloth and put the wireless charging case back on.

In addition to the above, Apple warns against placing metal foreign objects (for example, keys, coins, and jewelry) on the charging dock while charging your AirPods. Doing this may prevent the AirPods from charging.

Contact Apple if nothing works

Still having charging problems with your AirPods despite trying all of the above? If so, you should contact Apple for support. The problem can also be due to some hardware damage or fault on Apple’s part, be it factory or during shipping. In this case, you will most likely be issued with a replacement device, especially if the AirPods are still under warranty.
