Many Windows 10 users are complaining about LoadLibrary failing with Error 87: Wrong parameter. Well, that’s a pretty long error code. Oddly enough, it’s not related to a single app or program, but the apps that frequently cause this error are Dropbox and Autodesk. There could be other reasons as well.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at all the possible solutions that can get you back to work super fast.
1. Dropbox users
If you have Dropbox installed on your Windows machine and are getting this error, the first thing you need to do is uninstall and reinstall the video card driver. Open Device Manager from the Start menu and double-click Display adapters to expand it.
Right click on your video card to uninstall it. Restart your computer once the process is complete and Windows will automatically download and reinstall the correct driver. If not, you can go to the manufacturer’s website to download it manually. That will also make sure you’re using the latest driver version.
2. Autodesk users
Pay attention to Autodesk software users who are also using ATI cards. There seems to be a contradiction here. Copy this filename.
atig6pxx.dll
Press Windows key + S to open search and search for that filename. Right click to open the file location and rename the file to atig6pxx.dll.bak. I don’t have an ATI card so can’t share screenshots but the process is pretty straightforward. Don’t forget to update the display adapter driver to the latest version. Visit the manufacturer’s website to download them.
Reinstalling the mentioned app can also help with the problem once you’ve dealt with that file and the video card driver. That will also update the app to the latest version.
3. Reset apps
Whether you’re using AutoCad or Photoshop or Dropbox, reinstalling the app from scratch seems to have worked for many users. I recommend following the two steps above first. There is another option available too. Reinstall.
Press Windows key + I to open Settings and click on Applications.
Look for the application that is throwing the LoadLibrary fail with error 87 dialog and click it once to bring up the Advanced options.
You can reset the app here. This will reinstall but not delete any user data. However, you should back up.
4. Troubleshooting
Windows 10 comes with a troubleshooter that can find and fix problems with built-in Microsoft apps. However, this won’t work for third-party apps. If you see this error when you open Microsoft apps, open Settings again and search for Find and fix problems with Microsoft Store Apps.
Click Advanced in the pop-up window to select Apply repair automatically and select Next. Follow the on-screen instructions afterwards to troubleshoot, if found.
5. Check disk
Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges (right click on Command Prompt and click ‘Run as administrator’) from the Start menu and issue the command check disk.
chkdsk / r
What this command will do is check the integrity of the hard disk you are using. This is for the HDD, not the SSD. The command will search for bad sectors and try to repair them automatically. It will also look for incorrect information and correct or correct them.
6. SFC and DISM
If you are getting the error LoadLibrary failed with error 87, it may have something to do with corrupt system files. System files are those that are required by the OS to function properly. Open Command Prompt again with administrator rights and issue the System File Checker command.
sfc /scan now
It will check and repair system file integrity. You are not done yet. There is another command.
DISM.exe/Online/Cleanup Image/ScanhealthDISM.exe/Online/Cleanup Image/Restore Health
Do one by one. These processes may take some time, so make sure your laptop is connected to a power source.
7. Update Java and .NET Framework
If you have installed and are using any of these two programs, update both to the latest version from their official website. This is even more true if you are also playing Minecraft on your Windows machine.
8. Safe Mode and Clean Boot
Could be an application or software conflict. You can start by uninstalling any software that you have recently installed. See if it helps. If not, you will have to restart your computer in Safe Mode and Clean Boot, one by one, to see if it solves LoadLibrary fail with error 87 in your Windows 10 computer.
Error Is Machine
Computers are known to have errors from time to time, but nothing to worry about. Most of these errors can be solved if you know what to do and where. If you find another way to solve this error code, do share with us in the comments section below.
