The latest version of Internet Explorer 11 that ships with every Windows Phone 8.1 device is a pretty decent browser and should be more than enough for most people.
IE 11 has all the basics like private browsing, online video, basic file downloading, data compression built in.
But if your interests are more towards the tech side and passionate about technology, you may need more features to fully get on with your life or for entertainment.
If that’s you, check out these “pro” features available via UC Browser and Maxthon Browser.
1. Speed Dial
Just as desktop browsers offer a feature-rich start page that lists your most visited sites, bookmarks, apps, or pinned sites, these two have a start page. same head.
On UC, you have preformatted shortcuts to popular websites as tiles. You can make them bigger or smaller. You can add a lot of things here. Download, bookmark, search, scan QR codes, install and of course, link to a website.
Maxthon has a similar start page but here you can just add a link to the web page.
2. Manage Downloads
IE 11 lets you download files, but that’s all.
Before downloading any files, UC Browser will prompt you with a list of options. You can download files directly in the background so you can continue browsing or download files to UDisk. UDisk is UCBrowser’s cloud storage solution, just like Dropbox. You get 6GB of storage for free. So if you’re running low on storage on your phone, use their service and just download or stream content whenever you want.
Maxthon also comes with the same download functionality but without background downloads or cloud download support.
4. Night Mode
Both UC and Maxthon are included Night mode feature but with different implementation. UC Browser just dims the screen so you don’t hurt your eyes. Maxthon, on the other hand, inverts the colors of the website. This way, the white background of most web pages turns black and it’s easy to see in the end.
5. Scan QR code
Before Cortana took over the responsibility of search, there used to be a Scan QR button on the search page. A lot of websites especially those related to apps and mobile devices have QR Codes to download apps. It’s easier to scan a code than to open the Windows Store and search for the app yourself.
Both browsers have built-in QR code scanning capabilities.
6. Cortana Support
This is a UC Browser-only feature. Basically, you can wake up Cortana and say “UC Browser Bookmarks” and she will open the app and take you straight to the bookmarks folder. You can also ask her to scan the QR code or visit Download in the same way. But you can’t ask her to open a website. Hopefully this feature will be added soon.
7. Preload the next page
This is another UC exclusive. It is enabled by default, otherwise you can do so in the settings. This feature allows you to automatically load the next page even before you finish the current page. If you are browsing a multi-page article or the homepage of Reddit, this feature will be very useful.
Other features of UC . browser
Obviously UC Browser is the browser with the most features. For fans of customization, UC comes with themes that you can browse and apply with a single click.
It is the only browser that offers its own UDisk cloud storage where you can save files if you don’t have local storage space.
UC also comes with file sharing between two Windows Phone devices over Wi-Fi.
Third-party browser
Both these browsers are stable and powerful but you need to remember that they are third party browsers. That means they’re basically browser-based, just with extra features.
UC or Maxthon may never be as fast or stable as Internet Explorer but that’s just the way it is for third-party browsers on mobile devices. Just look at Chrome on iOS. Is it worth sacrificing a bit of speed for the feature? That is for you to decide.
