Apple iOS 13 is here and it’s beautiful. Mainly due to the system-wide dark mode feature that debuted with this release. It looks great, offers improved battery life on my dying old iPhone, and has some subtle icon changes in the interface. However, we’re here for dark mode tips and tricks and everything you need to know.
If you haven’t already, you can safely download Apple’s latest and greatest operating system update from Settings. I can confirm that it works fine, even on the old iPhone SE that I still own. Apple has come up with some nifty dark mode features that will enhance your user experience.
Let’s get started.
1. How to Enable Dark Mode on iOS 13
That is easy. Just open Settings and tap Display & Brightness.
You will notice a new option. Choose between Light or Dark theme here to see how it looks. Dark mode in iOS 13 has a truly dark look instead of the lighter black I’m used to seeing in some apps.
The fonts are white while all options or tapable text are in classic blue. Well done, Apple.
2. How to Enable Dark Mode in Control Center
Going back and forth between the home screen and settings can be a chore. Apple has been smart to enable a quick shortcut to dark mode right in the Control Center. To enable it, open Settings and tap on Customize controls.
At this point, I also recommend enabling the Access option in the app. So you can enable/disable dark mode from any screen using Control Center, even if you are using an app. You know, in case you don’t like what you see.
Scroll a bit to find the Dark Mode option and tap the little ‘+’ icon to add it. No need to save anything.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access the Control Center and manage Dark Mode settings.
3. How to schedule Dark Mode
Some users still prefer light mode while others prefer to use dark mode only after dark. They just want to protect their eyes from the harmful white light our new best friend emits. Go back to Settings and tap Display & Brightness. This time, tap on the Automatic option. A new Options tab will appear.
You can select the Sunset to Sunrise option which will ask your iPhone to use your location data and weather details to determine when to enable dark mode. Another option is Custom Schedule, where you can set a time schedule to switch between light and dark modes.
I just set it to dark mode. I like it better that way. Seeing the amount of time we spend in front of screens, it can be helpful in the long run. Plus, it looks cool.
4. Where does Dark Mode work in iOS 13
Don’t expect too much from this new option. Dark Mode works just fine on the Home screen, Control Center, Settings, and all apps developed in-house by Apple. That means it also works inside Apple Music, Notes, Reminders, and Calendar, for example.
It won’t work in third-party apps like Google Photos or any other apps that Apple has no control over. Some examples are Trello and IFTTT.
That can lead to some inconsistencies. You’re enjoying a darker screen when suddenly, you switch to another app and the white light dazzles you in the middle of the night. It’s eyesore. Quite a few apps have now joined the dark side, so just check the app settings to see if there’s an option to enable it. If not, why not submit a request?
5. Why Use Dark Mode
You probably already know this, so allow me to add a little more to that. As it may not have caught your attention on details like how dark mode can save battery life up to 60% in iPhone. That’s not all though. Google did some research on this topic and found similar results. Honestly, that’s a lot of battery life, and the less chords you have to use, the better.
Dark mode can also benefit your eyes, reducing stress, especially when you’re staring at the screen in the dead of night with the lights off. But there are studies that have found that dark mode is not the savior everyone wants. It’s not the hero we deserve, nor the hero we need. You have to blink enough, give them a break by putting your phone away often, and limit screen time in general. That’s why dark mode can’t help you if you’re addicted.
Join the dark side
Many developers are working to incorporate dark mode in their apps, software, and even websites. It’s refreshing to know how it can help with some of the common problems we face today. But as noted above, it can only help so much. In the end, it all comes down to healthy choices and lifestyle.
That said, how long do you use dark mode? Please share your experience in the comments below.
