Many people like to use custom ringtones on our Android phones. To do that, we often have to resort to the help of a file manager or ringtone application like Zedge. But when we try to change the ringtone, we are taken to the native Sound Picker app that only lists the pre-installed ringtones. So here we will tell you how to change default ringtone app on Android phone.
For some users, the ringtone picker app is stuck on a third-party app. So they want to remove the default setting for ringtones and go back to the Sound Picker or Sounds app. The problem is caused by the user choosing the ‘Always’ option instead of ‘Only Once’ when the phone asks them to choose the default ringtone app.
We need to change the ringtone or the notification selector app on Android. Take a look at the different ways to do it.
1. Reset or Clear Defaults
You must have noticed that if you have multiple apps for the same task, your phone will ask you to choose a default app. It gives you two options while listing apps – Just Once and Always. If you select Just Once, the aforementioned task will be completed after using the selected application. The interface will ask the same question again. And if you use Always, the same app will be used to complete the task.
That’s why you don’t see many options when changing ringtones. You must be stuck with Sound/Audio Picker or another app like file manager, Google Drive, etc
Here are the steps to reset the default ringtone app:
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to Apps or Apps & notifications or Application manager depending on the option available on your phone.
Step 2: Click on the three dots icon in the upper right corner and select Show system. If you don’t see the three dots icon or Display is unavailable, tap See all apps. Then, tap on the three-dot icon and select Show system.
Step 3: Scroll down and find Media Storage. Touch it.
Step 4: Click Open by default. If you don’t see it, tap Advanced and you should see Open by default.
Step 5: Click on Clear defaults. If no defaults are set or all options are greyed out, go to step 7.
Step 6: Try changing your ringtone now. If you get ‘Complete action using’ menu, you have succeeded in changing ringtone picker app. In case the problem persists, check the next step.
Step 7: You need to repeat the above steps to clear the defaults for Sound, Sound Picker and Android System. And, if you’ve chosen an app such as a file manager or Google Drive as the default app for ringtones, clear the defaults for them as well using the steps above.
2. Reset app preferences
If you can’t find default apps or the above method doesn’t fix the problem then you should reset app preferences. However, when you do that, it will remove the default actions for all apps on your phone, not just ringtones. Step 1: Open Settings on your Android phone. Tap Apps or Apps & notifications.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon at the top and select Reset app preferences. Confirm on the next screen.

Tip: You can also go to Settings > System > Reset preferences > Reset app preferences.
Bonus tip: Customize opening with settings
The original Open With or Complete Use Action menu lists only available apps. To make it smarter, you can take the help of a third-party app called Better Open With.
With this app you can choose another app to complete your action all the time without setting anyone as default. The app gives you some time to select the app for the task, otherwise it will complete the task with the previously set app. You need to set a priority app for different actions in the application settings Open better with. So you get the benefit of both Just Once and Always using this app.
Bye bye default apps
While our post mainly deals with resetting the ringtone app on Android, the same logic and steps can be used to reset defaults for other apps.
