10 Ways to Fix Download Pending Issue in Google Play Store

The Google Play Store is the legal and official place to download apps on your Android smartphone. But what happens when you can’t download apps? Quite a few Android users often complain about the Google Play Store download waiting error they get when trying to download their favorite apps.

It happens when you start download on Play Store and in My Apps & Games you will see this error with option to cancel download. There could be many reasons behind this. Let’s take a look at them all one by one below.

1. Clear the way

The Play Store automatically downloads and installs the latest version of the app on your device. However, the app you’re trying to download might be in a queue and so you’re seeing an error waiting to download. To combat that, open the Play Store, tap the menu icon, and select My Apps & Games.

To cancel an app download, tap the ‘x’ button or tap the Stop button to cancel all downloads at once. You can then download the app you want before continuing with the update.

2. Check Wi-Fi and data connection

It can happen even in this day and age. Your Wi-Fi is not working as expected or is very slow due to some error. See if enabling/disabling the Wi-Fi button helps you download apps using your mobile data plan.

On a bad day, it can also happen that your mobile data plan doesn’t work or is too slow to download apps. In that case, connect to a different Wi-Fi network or have your friend start their mobile hotspot. I also recommend disabling and re-enabling the data plan once to see if it fixes the error.

Note that sometimes, turning Airplane mode on/off can also help restore balance to the universe.

3. Disable VPN

People who are worried about their privacy are probably using a VPN. Some people also use VPNs to unlock access to region-restricted websites. I mainly use it to speed up my Internet, a bit, and block ads.

A recent update may have broken something. In that case, you should try and disable your VPN connection. See if that fixes the Play Store download pending error.

4. Force stop and clear data

Play Store may not work properly due to some residual data or cache. To clear old data and cache, go to Settings and open Apps and find the Google Play store.

You may be asked to sign back into your Google account when you open the Play Store. Do that and see if it helps.

Repeat the same process, but this time for Google Play Services which you will only find in Apps.

5. Reset app preferences

It can wreak havoc on your phone so I suggest you only do it if other methods don’t work. There is an option to reset app preferences Hidden deep inside app settings.

It will reset app preferences and settings of all apps, defaults or third-party settings, so you will have to set them all up again. My colleague detailed about resetting app preferences.

To do so, go to Settings, tap Apps, then open the menu.

Some users reported that they were able to resolve the Play Store download pending error by intentionally changing their date and time to something else before reverting it back to the original. If you think the time is correct, perhaps you should try changing it briefly to something else.

7. Remove the SD card

Not all smartphones support external SD cards, especially high-end smartphones but if your phone supports it and you are using an SD card, you should remove it. The SD card may be damaged, infected with a virus or malware, or may need formatting.

If any of the above is true, it’s possible that the SD card isn’t allowing the Play Store to download apps. As most of you know, you can also install apps and save data in SD card.

8. New account

If all else fails, there may be a problem with your Google account. Maybe a setting or permission is coming in the way. To make sure this isn’t the reason, sign out of your main Google account and try downloading apps with a different Google account. If the download works, you will have to check your Google account settings and permissions.

Go to Settings and tap Sync or Accounts based on the smartphone and OS version you’re using. Click Google here.
