McDermott was born in the London Borough of Havering in the United Kingdom to Karen McDermott and Alan McDermott. She has a younger brother named Brad McDermott.
McDermott, her parents, and her younger brother made an appearance on the BBC television program Wanted Down Under in 2009, when they discussed their potential move to Australia.
In 2013, they made another appearance on the program, Wanted Down Under Revisited, when they talked about their decision to stay in the UK.
