McKinney finished his senior year at Roswell High School with 82 tackles and seven interceptions. He pledged to play collegiate football at the University of Alabama.

For his efforts, he was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. McKinney was injured in an ATV accident during the Giants’ Week 9 bye week, breaking his hand and keeping him out of action for several weeks.
