McKinney finished his senior year at Roswell High School with 82 tackles and seven interceptions. He pledged to play collegiate football at the University of Alabama.
In 2017, McKinney participated in 13 games for Alabama as a true freshman, serving as a special teams and backup. 2018 saw him start 73 games and record two interceptions, three sacks, and 73 tackles.
