Customizing your Mac and having a wallpaper is a great way to express yourself while using your computer. But if you’ve been using this type of device for a while, you may encounter one particular annoyance: your wallpaper is constantly resetting to default.
Your wallpaper may keep resetting for a variety of reasons, but don’t worry – no matter how annoying, the steps to fix this problem aren’t difficult.
Here is a list of reasons why your Mac desktop wallpaper is not staying and how you can fix each reason.
Reason 1: Maybe you deleted the image
If you used a photo from the internet or something you took yourself, you may find that your Mac desktop wallpaper will reset after deletion. In this case, it’s possible that your computer chose to reset to default because the file was missing.
You may not realize this because closing the lid and putting the MacBook to sleep is a fairly common practice. And only when you reboot will you see a different wallpaper than the one you set. Here’s how to fix it.
Step 1: Download the image that used to be your screensaver back to your computer. Alternatively, you can go back to the website you downloaded the photo from or – if you haven’t deleted the photo yet – remove the photo from the Trash on your computer.
Step 2: Enter the image. While holding Ctrl, click on the image with your trackpad.
Step 3: Select Set Desktop Picture.
After doing each of the above, your wallpaper will change instantly. As long as you don’t delete the photo again, you won’t have any more problems in this respect.
Reason 2: MacOS doesn’t allow it
Another reason why your desktop wallpaper might keep reverting back to default is that your Mac has some bugs. This is something you may encounter after Apple launches a new version of macOS; problems like this usually go away after subsequent updates fix the problem.
If you suspect that your Mac has some kind of bug, you should check for possible software updates. To do this, follow the steps we have listed below this paragraph.
Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your Mac.
Step 2: Go down to System Preferences. This is the second option; you’ll find it under About This Mac.
Step 3: Once you are in the System Preferences app, click on the Software Update option. The icon looks like a cog wheel and is located near the bottom of this window.
Step 4: After clicking Software Update, your computer will search for any possible updates. If necessary, you will see a message that you need to update your computer on the screen.
Step 5: If prompted to update your computer, click this option.
In the future, you can avoid the hassle of manually checking for updates by letting your computer install them automatically. To do this:
Step 1: Go back to System Preferences.
Step 2: Go to Software Update.
Step 3: Check the box that says “Automatically update my Mac”.
If you click Advanced, you will be able to further customize this.
Reason 3: Your settings are wrong
In some cases, your desktop wallpaper will constantly change because you have allowed it to do so.
In your Mac’s settings, you’ll find an option to choose how long you want your wallpaper to last. However, in many cases you won’t want to tick that.
If you are worried that this box has been checked, then the steps below will help you fix this.
Step 1: Click on the Apple icon and go to System Preferences.
Step 2: Go to Desktop & Screensaver near the top of this window.
Step 3: Near the bottom, you will see an option called “Change photo:”. If the box is checked and is blue, click it to unmark it.
Step 4: Find the photo you want to set as the standby screen. Once you have found it, follow the steps we outlined in the first section to complete the process.
Keep your Mac wallpaper in place
When the Mac’s wallpaper changes suddenly, it’s both confusing and frustrating. You will be forgiven if you think you can’t do anything about it. Fortunately, however, you have plenty of options.
Your desktop wallpaper can change for a variety of reasons, some of which you might not have thought of. But by identifying the cause, you can both fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.
