Why is Prince Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor not a princess?

Why is Prince Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor not a princess? – Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor, born on 8 November 2003, is the eldest child and only daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

She is the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the niece of King Charles III. As of May 2023, she holds the 15th position in the line of succession to the British throne.

Lady Louise was born prematurely at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey. Her mother, then known as the Countess of Wessex, was urgently taken to the hospital from their residence at Bagshot Park, while her father, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex at the time, was on an official visit to Mauritius and could not be present for the birth.

Due to complications including placental abruption, both mother and child experienced significant blood loss, and Lady Louise was delivered via emergency Caesarean section. As a precaution, she was transferred to a neonatal unit at St George’s Hospital in London while her mother recovered at Frimley Park until her discharge on 23 November 2003. Her name, Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary, was announced on 27 November.

Lady Louise was baptized in the Private Chapel of Windsor Castle on 24 April 2004, with David Conner, the Dean of Windsor, conducting the ceremony. Her godparents included Lady Sarah Chatto, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, Lady Alexandra Etherington, Francesca Schwarzenbach, and Rupert Elliott. She was the final child to be christened in the original royal christening gown.

Born with a condition called esotropia, Lady Louise underwent an unsuccessful operation in 2006 to correct it. However, she received successful treatment in late 2013, which resolved the issue.

Lady Louise Windsor initially attended St George’s School at Windsor Castle and later moved to St Mary’s School Ascot in 2017, starting from Year 9. For her A-Level studies, she chose English, history, politics, and drama.

During her school years, Lady Louise Windsor actively participated in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program. In September 2022, Lady Louise began studying English at the University of St Andrews. In the summer of 2022, it was reported that she had worked at a garden centre.

Why is Prince Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor not a princess?

Lady Louise Windsor, the daughter of Prince Edward, has not been bestowed with a princess title due to the historical practice of favoring male heirs over female ones. This tradition, known as primogeniture, dictates that titles and inheritance pass to the eldest son rather than the eldest child.

Although the Royal Family modified the system of primogeniture in 2013 with the Succession to the Crown Act, which removed the preference for male heirs, this change does not retroactively apply to Prince Edward’s children. Since Lady Louise and her brother were born before the law was amended, they remain unaffected by the updated succession rules.
