Born on January 5, 1952, Sushil Kumar Modi was an Indian politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party who served as a member of parliament for Bihar in the Rajya Sabha until May 13, 2024. He served as Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister from 2005 to 2013 and as the state’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2020.

He had been a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member for his entire life. In July 2011, he was named Chairman of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers for the Imposition of the Goods and Services Tax.

Ratna Devi and Moti Lal Modi gave birth to Sushil Modi. He studied at Patna Science College, where he earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in Botany in 1973. He started the M.Sc. Botany program at Patna University, but he dropped out in the middle to join Jai Prakash Narayan’s social movement.

On August 13, 1986, Sushil Modi tied the knot with Jessie George, a Christian Keralite from Mumbai. Modi and Jessy were privileged to study together as research students and decided to tie the knot after falling in love.

When he was privileged to be at Patna University, Sushil Modi began his political career as a student activist. In 1973, he was elected General-Secretary of the Patna University Students’ Union.

During the Emergency and JP Movement Sushil Modi was arrested and was taken into custody in Bihar in 1974 during the student uprising. In the Supreme Court of India, he contested the MISA Act’s constitutionality, leading to the repeal of section 9 as unconstitutional.

From 1973 to 1977, he was scheduled under the MISA in addition to several other performers. He was taken into custody on June 30, 1975, during The Emergency, where he spent 19 months.

He entered active politics in 1990 and ran a victorious campaign from the Patna Central Assembly seat, which is currently called Kumhrar (Vidhan Sabha constituency). He won elections again in 1995 and 2000. He was appointed Chief Whip of the BJP Bihar Legislative Party in 1990.

After that, he announced his resignation from the Lok Sabha and assumed the position of Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar. He was assigned several departments including the Finance Portfolio. He kept his position as Bihar’s deputy chief minister following the NDA’s victory in the 2010 elections.

To support the BJP, Modi did not run in the Bihar Assembly elections in 2005 or 2010.
