Cassell attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar Community High School in East Baltimore, Maryland before transferring to Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield, Maine where he played basketball for a year under coach Max Good.
Cassell’s performances on the pitch while at Maine Central Institute made way for him to be successfully recruited to attend DePaul University. He was however declared ineligible based on his academics by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)’s Proposition 48 standards.
He then enrolled to San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas, where he became known as a big scorer. For his junior and senior years, Cassell moved to Florida State University in Tallahassee. During his collegiate years, he averaged 18.3 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game and led the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in steals.
Cassell was drafted in the 1st round, 24th overall pick in the 1993 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets. He went on to spend three seasons with the Rockets where he won two championships in 1994 and 1995.
He was also a key contributor during the Rockets playoff run his rookie year, notably dropping 22 points and seven assists in a game 7 win against the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Semifinals, and scoring 7 points in the final 32 seconds of a 93–89 win in game 3 of the 1994 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.
Cassell went on to star for the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers and the Boston Celtics. He won the championship again in 2008 before he retired a year later on May 2009.
After his retirement from playing professional football, Cassell took up the job as a basketball coach, serving as an assistant coach for Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and currently with the Boston Celtics.
