Norman Mineta was a politician from the United States. Mineta, a Democrat, served in the United States Cabinets of both Democratic President Bill Clinton and Republican President George W. Bush.
Mineta was born in San Jose, California, to Japanese immigrant parents Kunisaku Mineta and Kane Watanabe, who were denied citizenship by the Asian Exclusion Act at the time.
Thousands of Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans were interned for several years at Area 24, 7th Barrack, Unit B, in the Heart Mountain internment camp near Cody, Wyoming, during World War II.

Mayor Ron James appointed Mineta to a vacant San Jose City Council seat in 1967.
He was elected to office for the first time after serving on the city council for a year. During that term, he was elected vice mayor by his fellow councilors.
In the 1971 election to replace outgoing mayor Ron James, Mineta faced 14 other candidates. Mineta won every precinct in the election with more than 60% of the vote, becoming San Jose’s 59th mayor and the first Japanese-American mayor of a major American city.
Mineta, as mayor, put an end to the city’s 20-year-old policy of rapid growth through annexation, resulting in development-free zones in East and South San Jose. In 1975, he was succeeded as mayor by his vice mayor, Janet Gray Hayes.
