Who is Anthony Cumia: Biography, Age, Net Worth, Career & More

Anthony Cumia is an American radio host, podcaster, and broadcaster who was born in 1960 or 1961. He developed the internet video network Compound Media, which he hosts as the host of The Anthony Cumia Show. He is best known for co-hosting the Opie and Anthony radio show with Gregg “Opie” Hughes, which lasted from 1995 to 2014 and featured comic Jim Norton starting in 2001.

Cumia was let go by SiriusXM Radio in 2014 following a string of irate tweets in which he claimed to have been attacked by a black lady. Soon after, he launched The Anthony Cumia Show, his own video podcast, which ran until September 2017, when he co-founded The Artie and Anthony Show with actor and comedian Artie Lange. The Anthony Cumia Show was once again known as Lange’s Show after Dave Landau took over in May 2018.

Cumia was born into an Italian-American household in Flushing, Queens. Joe, his older brother, and Dawn, his younger sister, are his siblings. The family had residences in East Islip and Elwood, among other Long Island communities. Cumia attended East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School before transferring to Elwood’s Elwood-John H. Glenn High School. He took acting coach Joyce MacKenzie’s classes. Cumia lived with his father in San Juan Capistrano, California, after his parents divorced, where he spent the early years of his adolescence.

Cumia installed HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems prior to beginning his radio career. He was inspired by well-known New York City radio hosts Howard Stern and Don Imus to pursue a career in radio.

When Gregg “Opie” Hughes hosted an O. J. Simpson song parody contest on his Nighttime Attitude show on Long Island radio station WBAB, Cumia first got to know him. He and Joe made the decision to enter the competition, and they recorded a song under the name Rotgut called “Gonna Electric Shock OJ” to the tune of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” Hughes found the song to be popular and played it on his show numerous times before inviting the Cumias into the studio to sing it live in September 1994. Shortly after, Cumia started producing comic segments for Hughes and the station’s morning show in addition to his installation work. Early in 1995, Hughes and Cumia made the decision to start their own radio show. Hughes created an air check and distributed it to various stations.

Opie and Anthony was the first broadcast in March 1995 after Hughes and Cumia accepted an invitation to anchor afternoons at WAAF in Boston, Massachusetts. Cumia first believed that entering the radio industry would result in his earning a very nice income, but later said that his pay at WAAF was just above the rate of doing physical labor. For an April Fool’s Day hoax that had listeners believing Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was killed in a car accident while carrying a young female prostitute from Haiti, the two were dismissed in April 1998. Their time on WAAF, according to Cumia, was the most embarrassing part of his career.

Cumia first met Jennifer Cumia in 1987 while she was dating his brother Joseph. After she split up with Joe in 1989, Anthony started seeing her; the two got engaged after seven months. Their divorce was finally formalized in March 2002. Later, Cumia admitted that his decision to wed Jennifer was his biggest life error. He later started dating Melissa, also known as “Lobster Girl,” a lady he met on the show, and this led to online teasing of him, as he admitted on their show. Following their breakup, he dated model Melissa Stetten in 2012 and then Jill Nicolini in 2008[citation needed].

The daughter of Stress Factory owner Vinnie Brand, Danielle Brand, was Cumia’s girlfriend at the time of the violent argument, which took place on December 19, 2015, at their home. He was taken into custody by Nassau County police on suspicion of assault, criminal mischief, suffocation, and strangling. On December 21, Cumia was granted a release without posting bail, at which point his lawyer claimed that Cumia refuted the charges. Cumia entered a plea agreement in June 2016 and admitted to third-degree assault and unlawful obstruction of respiration. The initial charges to which Cumia pleaded guilty would be withdrawn and lowered to harassment, which would not leave Cumia with a record, in exchange for Cumia completing six months of outpatient alcohol therapy and participating in a program for batterers. Cumia later acknowledged biting Brand’s hand on his program because he was “angry” and “out of [his] mind.” Cumia spent April 2016 in a Florida Tampa Bay region rehabilitation center. Even while the incident from December 2015 was a factor in his choice to undergo rehab, he insisted that it was not a requirement of the court.
