In 2014, Steenhuisen’s influence grew further when he was appointed Chief Whip of the Official Opposition by Mmusi Maimane, who had recently been elected as the DA Parliamentary Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition. Steenhuisen’s tenure as Chief Whip continued until October 2019, coinciding with Maimane’s resignation from both leadership roles. In the aftermath, Steenhuisen seamlessly assumed the position of Leader of the Opposition.
Subsequently, in November 2019, he secured the interim leadership of the DA after defeating Makashule Gana, a DA MPL from Gauteng. This interim role led to his full-time leadership of the party, as he emerged victorious in the party’s Federal Congress in November 2020, defeating Mbali Ntuli, another DA MPL from KwaZulu-Natal. His leadership was reaffirmed with reelection on April 2, 2023, marking his continued prominence within the Democratic Alliance.
