Molly Shannon is a comedian and actress who appeared on Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2001.

She won the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for her performance in the film Other People.

Shannon was born on September 16, 1964, and her birthplace is Shaker Heights, Ohio, to an Irish-American Catholic family.

Mary Margaret “Peg” Shannon, her mother, was a teacher, and her father, James Francis Shannon, was a sales manager. Her maternal grandparents were both born in Ireland, her grandfather in Cloghmore, Achill, Mayo.

Shannon has worked as a hostess at Cravings on Sunset Boulevard and as a food demo girl at Gelson’s in Marina Del Rey.

She auditioned for her first major film role and was cast as Meg in the horror film remake of The Phantom of the Opera, alongside Robert Englund.

In 1991, she appeared as “the happy helping hand lady” in the second season of Twin Peaks, and in 1993, she had minor roles in three episodes of In Living Color, the first in a fake TV commercial with Shawn Wayans playing Chris Rock, the second in a sketch with Jim Carrey, playing LAPD Sergeant Stacey Koon, and the third in a Star Trek parody.

Her big break came in February 1995, when she was hired as a featured player on Saturday Night Live to replace Janeane Garofalo, who left in the middle of the season due to creative differences.

When Lorne Michaels revamped his cast and writers for season 21, Molly Shannon was one of the few cast members who remained along with David Spade, Norm Macdonald, Mark McKinney, and Tim Meadows.

Molly Shannon co-hosted the Rose Parade on Amazon Prime Video with Will Ferrell as fictional local television personalities Tish and Cord.

As their characters Tish and Cord, Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell co-hosted HBO’s coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.
