Prior to venturing into politics, he established himself as a successful actor, producer, and director. Founder and president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) political party, Vijayakanth served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies. Within the film fraternity, he earned the moniker “Captain.”

Vijayakanth entered matrimony with Premalatha on January 31, 1990. Born on March 18, 1969, Premalatha Vijayakant has carved her niche as an Indian politician, currently holding the esteemed positions of General Secretary and Treasurer within the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). Notably, she is the spouse of Vijayakanth, the former Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

The elevation of Premalatha within the DMDK ranks marked significant milestones in the party’s leadership. On October 19, 2018, Vijayakanth, the founder of DMDK, publicly declared and appointed Premalatha as the Treasurer of the party during the General Council Meeting in Chennai. This announcement took place in the presence of the party’s deputy secretaries, cementing her role and responsibilities within the organization.

Further solidifying her position in the DMDK hierarchy, Vijayakanth, on December 14, 2023, made another crucial announcement at the General Council Meeting held in Chennai. This time, Premalatha was appointed as the General Secretary of the DMDK, a testament to her growing influence and contribution to the party’s leadership. The presence of deputy secretaries at the meeting underscored the formal recognition of her pivotal role within the organization.

Known for his dedication to Tamil cinema, he exclusively acted in Tamil films throughout his career, with many of his works being dubbed into Telugu and Hindi. His films often depicted patriotic themes, featuring him in roles as a virtuous villager or engaging in dual role performances. Despite facing challenges, such as peers refusing to collaborate and renowned filmmakers hesitating to direct him, Vijayakanth acted in over 20 films portraying a police officer.

During the late 1970s and 1980s, his early career saw a mix of successes and setbacks. After initial setbacks with films like “Agal Vilakku,” “Neerottam,” and “Saamanthippoo,” he gained widespread recognition with the success of “Sattam Oru Iruttarai” in 1981. He then starred in films reflecting revolutionary and radical themes, such as “Sivappu Malli” and “Jadhikkoru Needhi.”

Gradually transitioning to commercial films, he achieved box-office success with hits like “Nooravathu Naal” and “Vaidhegi Kaathirunthaal.” His versatile roles in the 1990s included action-packed films like “Pulan Visaranai” and “Sathriyan,” further solidifying his status as an action hero.

The 2000s showcased his continued success with films like “Vaanathai Pola,” “Vallarasu,” and “Simmasanam.” He ventured into experienced roles with movies like “Arasangam” and “Mariyadhai.” In 2010, he directed “Virudhagiri,” a remake of the French film “Taken.”

His hiatus from films ended with a cameo appearance in his son Shanmuga Pandian’s debut film, “Sagaptham” (2015). His last film, “Thamizhan Endru Sol,” was released in 2015, marking his 154th movie.

Outside of his cinematic achievements, he was involved in publicized disputes, including a notable conflict with comedic actor Vadivelu. The political landscape also saw Vijayakanth actively participating in elections, aligning his party with different political alliances.
