Who was Veer Savarkar?

Hindu and Indian nationalist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known by the names Vir or Veer, was born on May 28, 1883, in Bhagur, India, and passed away on February 26, 1966, in Bombay (currently Mumbai). He was the founder of the political philosophy known as “Hindutva,” which he created while incarcerated in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri Jail in 1922.Vinayak Damodar Savarkar graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Ferguson College in Pune in 1905. Later, he received funding to study law in England. Damodar Savarkar is Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s father, and Radhabai Savarkar is his mother.

Savarkar assisted in training a group of Indian revolutionaries in sabotage and execution techniques that associates of his had reportedly learned from Russian exile revolutionaries in Paris while Savarkar was a law student in London (1906–10). He wrote The Indian War of Independence, 1857 (1909) during this time.At Fergusson College in Pune, Savarkar continued his political activism while a student. Radical Nationalist leader Lokmanya Tilak had a big impact on Savarkar. He got involved with groups like India House and the Free India Society in London. The older brother of Vinayak Savarkar, Ganesh Savarkar, opposed the Morley-Minto reforms when they were first introduced in 1909. Vinayak Savarkar planned this uprising. Later both of them were arrested.

He was taken for detention to the Andaman Islands.Savarkar requested a number of concessions from the Bombay government in relation to his sentences.On 30 August 1911, one month after his arrival in the Cellular Jail, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Savarkar filed his first clemency petition.Savarkar submitted a second clemency petition in 1917, this one calling for a blanket amnesty for all political prisoners. The Savarkar brothers were transferred to a jail in Ratnagiri on May 2, 1921. The British government provided him with a bungalow while he was under house arrest. He met prominent Indian freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Ambedkar, while under confinement at home.

Savarkar served as president of the Hindu Mahasabha during the Second World War and decided to support the British war effort in India in order to provide military training for the Hindus.Upon taking office as party leader, he introduced the phrase “Hinduize all Politics and Militarise Hindudom.” The Congress Party organised the meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and Jinnah in 1944, and the Hindu Mahasabha activists fiercely opposed it. The Hindu Mahasabha officially boycotted the Quit India Movement under Savarkar despite openly opposing it. Police detained the assassin Nathuram Godse and his alleged cohorts and conspirators after Gandhi was killed on January 30, 1948. On February 5, 1948, Savarkar, the former Hindu Mahasabha president, was detained. The massive amount of papers that were taken from his home had turned up nothing even tangentially related to Gandhi’s murder.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar stopped consuming food and water on February 1966. He had written a piece titled “Atmahatya Nahi Atmaarpan” just before he passed away.Before passing away at his Bombay home on February 26, 1966, his condition had reportedly gotten extremely serious.
