Who was Gangubai Kathiawadi?
Ganga Harjeevandas Kathiawadi was a native of Gujarat who earned a name for herself as one of Mumbai’s well-known and influential brothel owners. At a young age, she was sold into prostitution by her suitor Ramnik Lal after fleeing her home to Bombay. He was an influential pimp in a town with ties to the underworld, and she became known as Madam of Kamathipura because she sold drugs.
In her later years (probably between 1947 and 1964), she met Jawaharlal Nehru and spoke to him about the plight of sex workers and improved their living conditions. However, as Tamil journalist Pambam Mu Prasanth wrote in his BBC Tamil article, there is no hard evidence for this story.
Mumbai’s Mafia Queen (2011) provides information about the lives of 13 women who have influenced Mumbai. In it, Zaidi also provides information about Gangubai, according to which Gangubai comes from a well-educated family, she is obsessed with working in films, and she is a fan of Dev Anand.
Gangbai, 16, and her husband Ramnik, 28, fled to Mumbai and got married. Within days of her marriage, her husband sold her for ₹1,000 in a Kuntankhana (brothel). Ganubhai reluctantly starts working as a prostitute. Soon Gangbai became the head of several Kuntankhanas. An idiot named Shaukat Khan Pathan started exploiting them financially and physically.
Gambai went to the then underworld Don Karim Lala to complain about Patan. Lara promised her help and had her rakhi tied. Shaukat Khan is then warned and beaten by Lala. Since then, Gangubai’s reputation as Karim Lala’s alleged sister in the 1960s has grown. St. Anthony Girls’ High School, established in Kamathipura in 1922, launched a campaign to cleanse the area of ”bad influence.” This led to an order to relocate the brothel. Gangb ai resisted fiercely and effectively filed a complaint with then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The brothel never moved after that.
During this time, Gangubai also served the various needs of orphans and women in the prostitution business. Ganubhai has fled her homeland to act in films, counseling and sending back many young women who were stuck in prostitution. For this reason, everyone called her Ganga Maa ( mother) in her honor. After her death, her photograph and statue were placed in brothels in the area.
