In an event that w as captured on tape, King had been pummeled by cops. The jury could not agree on a finding for the fourth officer since three of the policemen were found not guilty. Jones and other protesters were detained, but the district attorney later dropped Jones’ charges.

Jones’ activism was also motivated by the stark racial inequalities she observed in New Haven, Connecticut, particularly when it came to the criminalization of drug use.

Jones moved to San Francisco and, in his own words, “tried to be a revolutionary” after receiving his Juris Doctor from law school in 1993.

He joined up with a number of left-leaning individuals and co-founded the socialist group Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM).

It organized discussion groups on Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin’s doctrines, participated in demonstrations against police brutality, and envisioned a multiracial socialist utopia.

In 2009, Jones worked as Special Adviser for Green Jobs for President Barack Obama and was a distinguished visiting fellow at Princeton University.

His non-profit ventures include the Color of Change, the Dream Corps, and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, all of which he either created or co-founded.
