Use iPhone as a Gaming Remote or Joystick for Computer

The idea of using a smartphone as a wireless controller for PC gaming is pretty cool, and we’ve seen two Android apps get the job done. I recently received an iPhone and wanted to try the same thing on it. My idea is to use one device per player and play a team game. I failed the mission, but the iPhone nailed performance for a single-player racing game like NFS.

Joystick

I used the Legacy for iPhone controller from Joypad for this task, and it was a really great experience. So let’s see how we can configure the app and enjoy wireless games on our computer. The application works for both Windows and Mac, both the server and the client are free to use without any limitations. In this post, I will be looking at a Windows server, but you can also apply this process on a Mac.

Joypad Legacy Controller

After you install the app on your iPhone and computer, first launch the app on your computer and wait for it to launch.

Before we connect mobile, let’s configure the desktop app and optimize it to play our favorite games. The thing to note here is that the app doesn’t install a joystick driver on your computer, but only acts as a remote for your keyboard, and each button in the app’s virtual keyboard is mapped to a key on the keyboard.

So all you need to do is, click New configuration and configure the mapped buttons for your game. For best results, open the game’s settings (the one you’ll run on your computer) and arrange the keys you need most when playing.

Having done that, launch the Joypad Legacy app on your iPhone and wait for the app to automatically connect. If the app doesn’t detect the phone, make sure both devices are connected to the same W-Fi network and try entering the IP manually. You can also create a virtual network from your PC if your router’s coverage is poor.

Configuration

Once the devices are connected, launch the game. You may need to change the gamepad display in the iPhone app for the buttons to match your configuration. Tap on the small joystick icon on the app and select the desired style.

You can now play games using the virtual gamepad on your iPhone. If you have multiple iOS devices, you can configure them individually for each player. click Data List on the desktop server app and select the option New player.

There’s currently no way to use the accelerometer to control your car in-game and the app hasn’t been optimized for iOS 7, but overall it serves the purpose and is a lot of fun.

So, if you are a game lover with your iPhone in your pocket, give the app a try and let us know if you like the wireless gaming experience.
