I recently purchased a 42 inch LED TV and a gaming laptop for a more powerful gaming and more elegant movie viewing experience. The two look (and work) like a couple, but what’s missing is a wireless keyboard and mouse. I realized it later because it became difficult to work on the big screen while sitting right in front of the screen.
Considering that I had almost spent my savings, I decided to think of an alternative instead of buying more devices and came up with the idea of using my Android phone as a trackpad, wireless keyboard and.. wait.. a remote control!
Yes, it is possible and the application that makes this miracle is called gPad. So let’s see how to set up the gPad and use it as a remote for your media center PC.
To get started, download and install the gPad client on your Android phone from the market. Also download and install the gPad Windows server program from the gPad website on the computer where you want to use your Android as a remote.
You can connect the gPad client to the server using USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi. Make sure you have all the necessary prerequisites to connect. For example, if you are connecting via a Wi-Fi Router, make sure you know the local IP address of your computer once you connect to it.
When you launch the program for the first time, click Setting to configure your connection type and establish a connection. Once you have successfully established an active connection, you can select any module of the program and use your Android as a remote control.
The trackpad opens up to a swipe area, a scrolling area, and two mouse buttons. By pressing your phone’s menu button you will also get a remote keyboard. If your phone supports multi-touch input, you can use it as a multi-touch trackpad for Windows. You can also add a touchpad widget on your homepage if you have to use it often.
The second and more interesting module is gPad. Simply put, this provides a dedicated remote control for many Windows apps and games. You can create/share/download gPad for:
- Presentation (PowerPoint, Google Docs)
- Media player (Winamp, iTunes, media player, etc.)
- Graphics Tools (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator)
- Media Center in Windows and Mac, XBMC, Spotify, Frontpad, eye TV, mediaportal.
- Keyboard and keyboard extensions
- Game cheat code or keychain

You can edit an existing gPad or create and share one of your personal gPads using Editor part. Create personalized layouts for your apps, arrange keyboard shortcuts, extend keyboards, automate key sequences, and more.
That’s it! You can now use your Android smartphone as an extension of your laptop hardware. It may take some time to get used to at first but once you get the hang of it, it really has the power and convenience in your hands.
My judgment
This app is awesome and does exactly what it says it does. While there is a significant delay in the touchpad response time, I’m not sure if the problem is caused by the hardware I use or the application itself. Let us know if you face any such issues and also your overall experience using the app.
