Hackworth is a Tazewell County Board of Supervisors member and a businessman from Richlands, Virginia. In January 2019, the members chose him to be the board’s chair.
With 76% of the vote on March 23, 2021, he emerged victorious in the special election to fill Ben Chafin’s seat in the Virginia Senate for the 38th Senate district.
Hackworth filed a petition with the Virginia Supreme Court to stop the state’s redistricting panel from creating legislative maps by utilizing a recently passed state legislation.
