Terrence Shannon Jr.’s career
From an early age, Shannon had a keen interest in basketball, particularly during a growth spurt during her early high school years. As a senior at Chicago’s Lincoln Park High School, he averaged 15 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.
Shannon played football for the school and was a receiver as well. He reclassified to the 2019 class and relocated to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, after the conclusion of his senior year, having received no offers of scholarships to play Division I basketball for colleges.
Because of his success with Mac Irvin Fire on the Amateur Athletic Union tour, he caught the interest of college programs. He was a four-star prospect who committed to Texas Tech after first committing to DePaul. Despite offers from DePaul, Florida State, Georgetown, and Illinois, he decided to join the Red Raiders.
In a 65–60 overtime loss to DePaul on December 4, 2019, Shannon scored a freshman season-high 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds. His 9.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as a freshman earned him a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Shannon was added to the watch list for the Julius Erving Award heading into his sophomore campaign. He was named to the Third Team All-Big 12 as a sophomore after averaging 12.9 points, 4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game.
Shannon remained eligible to play in college and was announced for the 2021 NBA draft on April 8, 2021. Finally, he went back to Texas Tech.
Shannon’s eligibility was reviewed on November 7 and he was placed on indefinite leave. On November 17, he was allowed to return to the field after three games.
He averaged 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per game while he was a junior. Shannon entered the transfer portal on March 25, 2022.
He made his Illinois commitment on April 29, 2022. He participated in the NBA draft combine following his freshman year at Illinois and filed for the 2023 NBA draft. Later, he decided not to enter the draft and spent his second and last season at Illinois.
Shannon was taken into custody on December 27, 2023, pursuant to a warrant issued by the Douglas County District Attorney in Kansas on charges of rape, having sex without consent, and using force.
Twenty-two days prior to his December 5 arrest, the warrant was issued. Shannon was reportedly in Lawrence “on or about” September 9, 2023, following his attendance at the Illinois vs Kansas football game.
According to reports, Shannon was also charged with sexual battery on another occasion. This charge claimed that Shannon had inappropriately handled a teenager who was born in 2005. The team suspended Shannon after he posted bail the next day.
