Up until 2014, the Swedish School of Dance and Circus (Dans- och cirkushögskolan, DOCH) provided postsecondary education in dance education, folk dance, dance, dance therapy, historical dance, choreography, and modern circus. It has been a part of Stockholm University of the Arts since January 1, 2014, and the former name is no longer in use.
The University of Dance and Circus (DOCH) was first established in 1963 as the Institute of Choreography (Koreografiska Institutet), later changing its name to the University College of Dance (Danshögskolan) in 1978. Due to its full government funding and operation under the Ministry of Education, Swedish and EU citizens were not required to pay tuition.
Live auditions with physical strength, flexibility, endurance, and theatrical ability tests were held in Stockholm to determine who would be allowed to attend the circus school. Every applicant also had to provide a demonstration of their particular area of expertise in performance.
Under the direction of Ivar Heckscher, the program taught students juggling, aerial technique, equilibristics, and acrobatics. Each student also received advanced instruction in at least one field.
