Tony Dungy was born on October 6, 1955, in Jackson, Michigan. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he played college football as a defensive back.
After graduating, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1977 and played for the team for four seasons. He then played for the San Francisco 49ers for one season before retiring from the NFL in 1981.
After retiring from the NFL, Dungy began his coaching career as a defensive assistant for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He then worked as a defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being named the head coach of the Buccaneers in 1996.
