Danza was a professional boxer with a record of nine wins and three defeats, nine knockouts seven of which came in the first round, and three technical knockouts. All but one of his matches ended in knockouts.
Immediately following his University of Dubuque graduation, Danza was spotted by a producer at a New York boxing gym.
Then he landed a role on the TV series Taxi as T ony Banta, a cab driver and occasional boxer, and went on to star in Who’s the Boss? as Tony Micelli, a former baseball player, housekeeper, and single parent.
In 1988, Danza received a star at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his services to the television industry. In Angels in the Outfield (1994), Danza also portrays baseball player Mel Clark.
Danza also appeared in the ephemeral sitcoms Hudson Street (1995) and The Tony Danza Show (1997), which should not be confused with his talk show of the same name from 2004 to 2006. He appeared in the television series Family Law from 2000 to 2002.
