Sheens is a former player and current coach in Australian professional rugby league football. Between 2009 and 2015, he served as the head coach of the Australian national side.
He has also served as the head coach of National Rugby League (NRL) teams, including the Penrith Panthers, Canberra Raiders, North Queensland Cowboys, and Wests Tigers.
Before retiring and taking over as their coach, Sheens played as a prop forward for Sydney’s Penrith club in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2021, Sheens came back to the Wests Tigers as the Director of Football Operations.
Later, under his leadership, the Raiders won the 1989, 1990, and 1994 premierships. He captured the 2005 premiership with the Tigers.
Along with coaching the New South Wales Blues during the 1991 State of Origin series, Sheens also established a new record for the most games played in the Australian Rugby League Premiership.

As part of England’s preparations for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, he served as the head coach of the Combined Nations All-Stars during their 26-24 victory over England on June 25, 2021, at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington.
