Dixon was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to Glenys Dixon and Ron Dixon. He shares the same parents with his two older sisters, Traci and Adelle.

Dixon’s parents ran a dirt racetrack in Townsville, North Queensland, and competed in automobile racing on a variety of tracks.

In search of better possibilities, the family migrated to Australia in 1976, settling in Townsville before returning to Auckland, New Zealand, ten years later following a serious accident involving his father.

Dixon went to James Cook High School, Green Meadows Intermediate, and Manurewa Central Primary.

Dixon started racing at the age of seven and went on to win 30 major karting championships in Australia and New Zealand for his age group.

At the age of 13, Dixon advanced to auto racing and won the 2000 Indy Lights, the 1998 Australian Drivers’ Championship, the 1994 New Zealand Formula Vee Championship, and the 1996 New Zealand Formula Ford Class II Championship.

Prior to joining CGR in 2002 after PacWest failed due to financial issues, he made his Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) debut in 2001 with the PacWest Racing team. In his third series appearance, he claimed his first significant open-wheel victory.

In 2003, Dixon and CGR made the switch to the IndyCar Series, where he won the championship in his first season with three victories.

After a winless 2004 season, he won one race in 2005, finished fourth with two victories in 2006, and came in second to Dario Franchitti with four triumphs in 2007. With five victories (including the Indianapolis 500), Dixon captured his second IndyCar championship in 2008.

He broke Sam Hornish Jr.’s record for most series victories in 2009 by finishing second to teammate Franchitti. From 2010 to 2012, he finished third in all but one of the seasons.

Dixon finished third overall with two victories the season after winning four races to claim his third series championship.

He tied Juan Pablo Montoya for the series lead in points in 2015 but was ultimately proclaimed the winner after a count-back on the drivers’ combined number of victories. He won his fourth IndyCar championship that year.

Dixon’s performance declined in the 2016 and 2017 seasons, but he still managed to pick up three victories and place sixth and third overall, respectively.

He won his fifth series championship in 2018 with three victories, and two years later, with four victories, he won his sixth championship.

Dixon improved his performance in 2022, winning two races to finish third in the points standings after finishing fourth overall with one victory in 2021.

His overall record in American open-wheel racing includes 53 victories and 133 podium finishes. Since 2004, Dixon has also participated in endurance races such as the International Race of Champions, V8 Supercars, American Le Mans Series, Rolex Sports Car Series, IMSA SportsCar Championship, and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In both 2008 and 2013, he received the New Zealand Sportsman of the Year award. In 2009, Dixon was named a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, and ten years later, he was named a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM).
