Third Eye Open gameplay details, trailers & all we know

Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open is an upcoming coming-of-age narrative tale with a unique (and frankly mesmerising) Joss Papercraft-inspired art style that follows a young girl throughout five years of her life.

Developed by Cellar Vault Games and published by Chorus Worldwide Games – who is known for bringing Coffee Talk to console and is also publishing the upcoming Last Time I Saw You), it’s centred around the girl’s ability to see spirits and her friendship with a ghost named Xiu.

What is Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open?

Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open – which is set to launch in Summer 2024 – follows Ting throughout the ages of five to twelve. According to the game’s Steam Page, it’s “steeped in Malaysian tradition, culture, and folklore”, with both Ting and Xiu facing challenges from the real and spirit worlds.

During a press event, I was told that the tale progresses from a ‘simpler time’ and is initially quite carefree, becoming much darker and dire throughout the course of its narrative.

While linear, Third Eye Open also will set up evidence for a subjective, morally based choice at the end – and you’ll do everything from interacting with Ting’s family to helping friends out and using a mid-2000s computer.

What platforms will it be on?

If you’re as intrigued by Third Eye Open’s gameplay and Joss Paper visuals as I am, you’ve got a few options for platforms, as it’ll be available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

PC players can have a little preview into Ting’s adventure early as well, because there’s a demo currently available to download and play on the Steam storefront!

Are there any Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open trailers?

There’s currently only one trailer for the game, which arrived back in May 2023. In it, we see Ting navigating dimly lit corridors, exploring her ‘Home Sweet Home’, and interacting with her otherworldly friend, Xiu.

There’s a scene that shows off a diary (which looks like the game’s version of a quest log) showing off the date as 2005 before things start to take more of a sinister turn – there’s even some quick time events on show too!

More details may be revealed over time, and if that’s the case, I’ll keep this page updated with all of the latest news.
