Wolfgang Johannes Topfschnig was born in Sankt Veit a der Glan, Austria, on July 8, 1949. At the age of 14, he also participated in a demanding culinary program after learning to cook from his mother.

Wolfgang was Raymond Thuilier’s apprentice at Hôtel de Paris, L’Oustau de Baumanière, and Maxim’s Paris. In 1973, Puck relocated to the countryside and spent two years working at La Tour in Indianapolis. After that, he made the decision to move to Los Angeles, where he worked as a chef and was a co-owner of the Ma Maison restaurant, which is recognized with being the origin of “California cuisine.”

After publishing his first cookbook, Modern French Cooking for the American Kitchen, in 1981, he opened his first restaurant, Spago, on the Sunset Strip in 1982. He moved the restaurant to Beverly Hills in 1997. The restaurant has been recognized as one of the Top 40 Restaurants in the United States since 2004.
