Karen Carpenter (March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983) was an American vocalist and drummer who, along with her older brother Richard, formed half of the trendy duo the Carpenters.
Her classmates appreciated her vocal abilities, which included a remarkable three-octave contralto range. Carpenter’s music continues getting accolades, including a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest vocalists in 2010.

Burris was nine years her senior, divorced with an 18-year-old kid. A few days previous to the event, Karen was taped performing a new song, “Because We Are in Love”, and the recording was played for guests during the wedding ceremony. Her brother and John Bettis wrote the song, which was released in 1981. The couple made their home in Newport Beach.

Carpenter want children, but Burris had a vasectomy that he refused to reverse. This disagreement caused the marriage to terminate after 14 months. Burris was living above his means, borrowing up to $50,000 (equivalent to $160,944 in 2022) from Carpenter at a time, until she was left with only stocks and bonds.
Burris was also said to be impatient by Carpenter’s pals. Carpenter’s companion Karen Kamon described the marriage as “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” It was the very worst thing that could have happened to her.”
Carpenter changed her will in September 1981, leaving her marriage house and its furnishings to Burris but leaving everything else to her brother and parents, including her fortune, which was believed to be between five and ten million dollars (between $16,000,000 and $32,000,000 in 2022). Carpenter and Burris split up two months later after an argument at a restaurant after a family meal. Carpenter filed for divorce while a patient at Lenox Hill Hospital on October 28, 1982.
