THE FINALS player count for Season 2 & is it a dead game?

Highlights:

  • THE FINALS still holds a relatively healthy player base on PC
  • The player count is trending downwards as Season 2 progresses

Despite THE FINALS launching to critical acclaim back in December 2023, it’s fair to say that it’s struggled to hold much of its initially captive player count. Debuting on Steam with an all-time peak of 242,000 players, it initially seemed promising that Embark’s latest shooter could be one for the ages.

However, as the months have gone by, the attention span of players has waned as a slow trickle of new content has struggled to keep them engaged. As such, the daily player count of THE FINALS is much less than it used to be – but does that make it a dead game?

THE FINALS player count (May 2024)

Season 2 is well underway in THE FINALS, and the daily 24-hour peak is currently sitting at around 15,000 players on Steam (via SteamCharts). The player count tends to dip down to a minimum of 8k players during off-peak times, meaning there are usually always enough players to fill either a casual or ranked match whenever you’d like to play.

However, this is a massive drop-off from April, which previously saw a 24-hour average peak of 28,000 players. That’s almost half of its player-base that has gone elsewhere in the space of a few months. This is likely due to the seasonal content running a little stale, with Season 3 still a little ways off.

Bear in mind that this data is only for the PC platform. There’s sadly no way to track how many people are playing THE FINALS on Xbox and PlayStation.

Is THE FINALS a dead game?

Ultimately, it’s up to the individual player to decide for themselves whether a game is ‘dead’ or not. If you ask me, a game is alive and thriving as long as:

  • There are enough players to host a match without long queue times
  • New content is being released for the game

Given that it’s still always possible to find a match in THE FINALS, and that Embark is still releasing regular seasonal content for the game, it’s not quite a ‘dead game’ just yet.

While it can be easy to assume that THE FINALS is a ‘dead game’ due to the massive disparity between its launch player count and now, that’s not really the case. In fact, it’s quite normal for the player count of a game to drop dramatically a few months after release.

Comparing THE FINALS to other shooters in the same vein, Call of Duty currently has a 24-hour peak of 101k players, around a fifth of what it was during its all-time peak.

Likewise, Battlefield 2042 – a game that’s generally considered ‘dead’ – currently has a 24-hour peak of 17k players. Again, this is around a third of the concurrent players that it achieved when it first launched on Steam.
