Furlong is from an agricultural family in County Wexford’s Horeswood parish. At the age of sixteen, he began playing rugby at County Wexford’s New Ross RFC. He represented Horeswood in Hurling and Gaelic Football as well.

In November 2013, Furlong replaced a player for Leinster Rugby in their senior debut against the Dragons. He was a member of the Leinster A squad that took home the British and Irish Cup in 2013–14.
