He was elected to the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1983 after running for office on a Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket from the Chamundeshwari district. Later, he became a member of the ruling Janata Party and was elected as the organization’s first president, Kannada Kavalu Samiti.He held various portfolios in Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde’s administration, including Sericulture, Animal Husbandry, and Transport, at various times. He was appointed Secretary General of Janata Dal later that year, a party that H. D. Deve Gowda had also joined.
When J. H. Patel became chief minister in 1996, he was appointed deputy chief minister.He joined Deve Gowda’s Janata Dal (Secular) faction following the Janata Dal split and rose to the position of state unit president. He was once more appointed Deputy Chief Minister in 2004, when the Indian National Congress and JDS formed a coalition government with Dharam Singh as Chief Minister.After having disagreements with H. D. Deve Gowda in 2005, Siddaramaiah was expelled out of JDS After leaving the JDS , he wanted to start the “ABPJD” regional party in the state, but he decided against it because previous regional parties in Karnataka had failed to last. After receiving widespread support from the Backward classes, he eventually joined the Congress.On May 8, 2013, he won the election for the same constituency (Varuna), winning a seventh term in office. In the Karnataka assembly, he was chosen to serve as the Congress legislative party’s leader. He led the Congress, which later helped the Janata Dal (Secular) form the government in 2018 to oust the BJP. He served as the chairman of the committee that coordinated the H. D. Kumarswamy-led coalition government of the JDS and the Congress. 17 MLAs later defected, causing the Congress-JDS government to fall.Recently His party won the Karnataka Assembly Elections with a thumping majority. Siddaramaiah caused controversy in February 2023 with his divisive comment on Hindutva.Siddaramaiah was asked to comment on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s support of a Lingayat as the next chief minister of Karnataka in an interview on a Kannada news channel in April 2023. In response, Siddaramaiah said, “CM is a Lingayat already. He has corrupted himself and destroyed the state.”The BJP took issue with his remarks, claiming that Siddaramaiah had offended the community with his crude and hateful remarks. Later, when explaining the situation, Siddaramaiah claimed that his statements were misrepresented rather than having made any controversial statements.
