Staten Island is where Ellis was both born and reared, and it is also where she received her education at Staten Island Academy. Her mother and father, Barbara and Ken Ellis, brought up both her and her elder brother, Spencer, as their own.
Ellis was quite the athlete when she was younger; among other sports, she competed in the Junior Olympic swimming competition and played hockey. Ellis came out as a lesbian during her final year of college while she was a student at Russell Sage College, where she had previously kept her sexual orientation a secret. Ellis spearheaded a public campaign against an effort by the college administration to shutter down the sole women’s centre on campus.

Ellis began her career in the media with the re-launch of Condé Nast’s House & Garden shortly after she graduated from Russell Sage College in 1993 with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Women’s Studies. Ellis started her career in the media the next year, in 1995. Her early job experience at the publishing and mass media conglomerate Condé Nast was important in her later professional success.
In the beginning, Ellis was employed by Condé Nast’s House and Garden magazine. After that, she worked as a senior manager at New York magazine for a while, and then she became a director at In Style. After her time at In Style, Ellis went on to create and lead the turnaround of Real Simple. This led to her landing a position at Vogue, where she supervised the lifestyle group brands of ten different companies. Ellis was an expert in marketing, and she found that leadership positions were the best venue for her to utilise her skills.
In order to broaden the scope of her activities, Ellis became active as the co-chair of OUT at Time Inc., the LGBT employee resource organisation for the corporation. From 2008 to 2013, she was in charge of the programming that highlighted the many different aspects of the LGBT community.
Ellis first participated in activism on behalf of the LGBT community in 1992, when she marched in Washington, D.C., in favour of the rights of women. She returned to Washington, D.C., in 1993 to march in support of the rights of LGBT people.Ellis began his tenure as president and chief executive officer of GLAAD on January 1, 2014,[4] which is the sole organisation in the United States fighting to advance lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality via the power of the media.
