Shay Carl is the stage name of Shay Carl Butler, an American YouTube celebrity born on March 5, 1980. Shaycarl and ShaytarDS, two of his three YouTube channels, each have over three million subscribers. Butler and Corey Vidal raised the majority of the $200,000+ needed for the production of their documentary, titled Vlogumentary, through an Indiegogo campaign. Butler was cited by Forbes as one of the “most successful YouTube video entrepreneurs,” and The New York Times profiled Butler’s production company Maker Studios in 2011.
Early years
Shay Carl Butler was born to Carl and Laurie Butler in Logan, Utah, on March 5, 1980. The oldest of four kids, Butler. Casey, Carlie, and Logan, three of his siblings, are all involved in the YouTube community. Kayli Butler (HeyKayli) and Carlie Wood (CarlieStylez and WhatsUpWoods) both have over 500,000 subscribers on YouTube, although Logan Butler (LoganMckay55) only has slightly less than 400,000. Casey Butler9 is married to Kayli Butler. Butler’s family first relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, when he was four years old, and then to Pocatello, Idaho. Butler completed a full-time, two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Barbados, Trinidad, and Guyana after graduating from Highland High School. He briefly studied at Idaho State University before quitting to start his own business. Butler worked as a school bus driver and granite countertop installer before making an online appearance. Butler’s YouTube popularity increased after Philip DeFranco viewed one of his videos and praised him. Butler’s subscription count increased as a result of the shout-out, and he made friends with DeFranco. Butler increased his subscriber count by more than fourfold by collaborating with other YouTubers at The Station. Butler declared on September 28, 2016, that he would shut down the Shaytards YouTube channel on March 5, 2017, the day of his 37th birthday, for a year.
On February 12, 2017, Butler made the temporary departure from YouTube known. Butler declared on his Twitter page that his “mission is to rehab” as a result of his alcoholism. According to a report in the International Business Times, Carl allegedly communicated sexually explicit tweets with Aria Nina, an adult webcam model. The Shaytards channel started posting videos again in March 2018 after the family declared they would “take it one day at a time” and not commit to a daily vlog schedule. In January 2003, Butler wed Colette Crofts (a.k.a. Colette Kati). Five kids—Gavin, Avia, Emmi, Brock, and Daxton—were born to the couple. His family is referred to as “YouTube’s first family” and the “Shaytards.” Butler said that a large portion of his children’s life had been documented and made available to the public. Brock Butler, Butler’s kid, has been referred to online as the “first Truman baby” because of the extensive documentation of his life. The front cover of James Blunt’s album Some Sort of Trouble featured his daughter Emmi. The song “Forever Love” was published by Butler’s second daughter, Avia, on June 12, 2014.
2014 saw Butler purchase a 1,000-acre ranch in Pocatello, Idaho. He bought the nearby Pebble Creek Ski Resort in Inkom, Idaho, in 2016.
Butler completed three marathons after losing 112 pounds (50.8 kg) in a year, including one with his close friend and motivational speaker Dave Ramsey.
